Themes of Psychology Cumulative Assignment Psych 1100D, Summer 2021 Dr. McGinty You can think of this class as a 'greatest hits' compilation of psychology. We covered many of the big topics, but very quickly. You will review these themes and connect specific examples of topics you've learned so far in this class to those themes. Choose TWO of the themes (included on Carmen and at the end of this worksheet) to work through for the following questions. For each theme, you will find evidence from two separate chapters to support that theme. Theme #1: Psychological biological, social, and cultural factors influence mental processes and behavior Where can you find evidence for this theme in your textbook or lecture videos? First, identify two concepts or ideas from different chapters. Define each concept/idea in your own words . Remember to cite either the textbook or lecture videos in your responses. (1.5 points) Concept/idea #1: Epigenetics research shows us something really interesting, which is that the environment a mother experiences during pregnancy can have a huge impact on the way her unborn child's genes behave. It's like a hidden conversation happening at a microscopic level, where external factors can leave a lasting impression on the genetic makeup. This means that what a pregnant woman encounters, from her diet and stress levels to exposure to toxins, can influence how genes are expressed in her growing baby. (Lecture Video, The Developing Mind: Epigenetics) (1.5 points) Concept/idea #2: Cognitive dissonance is when someone feels psychologically uneasy because they have conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or values. It happens when people have thoughts that contradict each other or they do/say something that goes against their existing beliefs or values. This uneasy feeling motivates them to resolve the conflict by changing their beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors to restore internal harmony and reduce the cognitive dissonance they're experiencing. (Lecture Video, The Connecting Mind: How are our attitudes influenced by others?)
(2 points) How do these concepts/ideas support the theme you chose above? Both the concept of epigenetics and cognitive dissonance support the theme that psychological, biological, social, and cultural factors influence mental processes and behavior. Epigenetics research shows how the environment during pregnancy can impact gene expression which highlights the biological influence. Cognitive dissonance shows the psychological aspect, showing how conflicting beliefs or attitudes can lead to discomfort and motivate individuals to change their behavior. So, both these concepts show how the extent to which the nature of factors shapes human behavior. (1 point) How does this theme relate to other classes you’ve taken or other areas of your life? Yes, this theme relates to other areas in my life. An example is how my parents' beliefs and attitudes shape my own thoughts on specific issues. As I grew up and even now when I'm an adult I would adopt my parents' perspectives and would take their viewpoints as my own. Their beliefs become ingrained into my mind which would change the way I view everything. This shows how social and cultural factors had a big impact on my thinking patterns and the formation of my own beliefs and values. Theme #2: Our perceptions filter our experiences of the world through an imperfect personal lens. Where can you find evidence for this theme in your textbook or lecture videos? First, identify two concepts or ideas from different chapters. Define each concept/idea in your own words . Remember to cite either the textbook or lecture videos in your responses. (1.5 points) Concept/idea #1: During adolescence, we start to see how much our surroundings shape who we become. It's an important period of someone's life because we become more aware of how our relationships with friends, family, and the cultural influences around us affect our behavior and shape our identity. These external factors play a huge role in shaping our attitudes and how we see the world. It's an important stage where we begin to discover ourselves and figure out our place in the world. (Lecture Video, The Developing Mind: Adolescence) (1.5 points) Concept/idea #2: Correspondence bias is When we judge someone based on their behavior or actions, without thinking about the external factors that could've influenced them in that moment. We then attribute that behavior in that moment to their
