Application questions Using Rotter’s social learning theory, analyze Randall’s behavior by answering the following questions. 1. What type of locus of control does Randall appear to have? Provide evidence for your answer. - Randall has an external locus of control because of his belief that the outcomes of his life are controlled by everyone but himself. He says that when he goes to school the teachers are against him by putting trick questions on tests or unreasonable assignments to make him purposely fail, the landlord kicked them out and called the police on Randall for his bomb (which he blames on bad luck), and his friends weren’t reliable to have because his dad left when he was young so he thinks everyone will just leave him. 2. According to Rotter, what is outcome expectancy ? How does it influence Randall’s decision to argue/fight with a schoolmate who is verbally abusive? - Outcome expectancy is a person’s expectation that their behavior will be reinforced. This comes from Randall’s aggression that's shown at home. When Randall was younger, his dad left. Similarly, Randall’s mom is an alcoholic and takes it out verbally on Randall at home. This leads to Randall’s outcome expectancy of students at school; he felt he couldn’t rely on people because of his father’s absence and he feels he must defend himself from any other verbal abuse by showing aggression and fighting at school because he can't at home. 3. Use Rotter’s concept of reinforcement value to explain why Randall chooses to argue and fight with other students even though he knows he risks being expelled by doing so. - Using Rotter’s theory, Randall’s reinforcement value would be a positive reinforcement of the beliefs of his school and peers. If he gets in fights to protect himself from verbal abuse, even knowing expulsion is a consequence, being expelled would reinforce the idea that the teachers and students are against him. If Randall gets in a fight and doesn’t get in trouble, he knows he can get away with it, but if he were to get in trouble, it would just further his belief that the world is against him. Theory Comparison Questions 1. Use Horney’s theory to explain Randall’s behavior.
- Randall exhibits the neurotic need to exploit others. He fears that he may be manipulated or exploited and look stupid, hence his anger towards his ex-girlfriend’s breakup, the anger towards the teachers at the school for trying to make him fail, the students that he can’t trust because he is afraid of them leaving, and even the fighting against his peers when they challenge him or show some verbal aggression towards him. He also shows some overlap in the neurotic need for power or control, which is having power over everyone and everything, all due to the same reasons above. 2. Use Skinner’s radical behaviorism to explain Randall’s aggressive behavior. - Randall is aggressive because he is used to negative reinforcement. If he receives verbal abuse at home he in turn will verbally abuse others to relieve himself of the pain of his abuse. Randall has experienced conditioning that his actions won’t receive a positive punishment, such as getting kicked out of school for his actions. 3. According to Adler , what personality type does Randall display? - Randall’s personality type is the ruling/ dominating type. He is aggressive, dominant, distrusting/ doesn’t care about others, a bully, and a sadist. He finds pleasure in harming his ex-girlfriend due to his breakup with him and would rather fight students to maintain dominance and let his aggression out than walk away.
