2 Journal Assignment The model of addiction that I gravitate towards is the learning model (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). The learning model is based on the assumption that substance use results in a decrease in negative psychological states, like anxiety and depression, so there is a positive reinforcement to continuing using substances (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). One short coming for this model is that it is more effective if it is used early into the addiction as there will be fewer behaviors to unlearn (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). While it can still be successful later into the addiction, it will be more difficult to unlearn more behaviors that were learned through the addiction. The information on different models of addiction counseling will influence my counseling career. In general, the psychological models will influence my career the most, even outside of addiction counseling (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). Since I plan on working with children and adolescents, theories like cognitive-behavioral therapy will be useful for me when working with my clients on negative behaviors. It will be important for me as a counselor to be able to assist my clients in replacing the negative behavior with something positive (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). A lot of my clients that I will be working with after graduation are children who live below the poverty line and have suffered some form of trauma. With this information, I will be able to utilize concepts from the psychodynamic model to work through any events that may be causing negative behavior (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). One model that I feel like I will struggle with implementing in my career would be any of the biological models, including the genetic model (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). I feel like this one would be a challenge for me because, as a counselor, I can’t change genetic factors that may make a person gravitate towards any addiction. As a counselor, I will be able to help my clients make different choices that can help them avoid addiction, but if it is a genetic predisposition that may cause addiction, I am unsure of how much I will be able to help the clients in that situation.
