Blindness Blindness can result in reorganization of other sensory cortices and changes in other senses Visual agnosia: object recognition deficit Due to damage to higher visual cortical areas Blindsight : Visual performance of cortically blind individuals with damage to visual cortex Audition Energy : sound waves Accessory structures: pinna (outer ear) to cochlea (inner ear) Transduction : hair cells (cilia) on basilar membrane (cochlea floor) bend as fluid moves à signal to auditory nerve Coding of waves: Amplitude – loundness (decibels) Length (frequency) = pitch (hertz) Also location on basilar membrane (place theory) Purity = timbre (flute to oboe) Hearing (audition) The sense we rely on most after sight Perception of hearing is based on physical properties of sound waves Pitch: wave frequency (Hz) Loudness: amplitude of sound waves (dB) Timbre: complexity of sound
