Hayden Thompson Professor Carpenter PSYC-1030-UC6 8 December 2022 Module 7 Written Assignment With our very last module in this psychology class, there was a lot of information to take in from the 3 chapters that we studied. In Chapter 14, we learned a lot about stress and ways to push through and try to get away from that stress, for there are many instruments used in the study of stress that were created decades ago and are still being used today. In Chapter 15, we learned a lot about mental health and mental disorders. In Chapter 16, we learned more about mental disorders, but more specifically on treatment for them, such as therapy and medications. In this written assignment I will be focusing on three main points; The Social Readjustment Rating Scale, the basic features of the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), and types of psychotropic medications. To begin, I will be discussing and describing the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) that we learned about in Chapter 14 of Module 7. The Social Readjustment Rating Scale is basically supposed to be a way for people to easily cope with stress and help get rid of all the negative emotions that one may be feeling from whatever they may be stressing. Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed this system because they wanted to examine the link between stresses in life and physical illness, based on the hypothesis that life events requiring major changes in a person’s normal life routines are stressful, whether these events are desirable or undesirable. The SRRS has been used in hundreds of studies (Thoits, 2010), but despite its use in numerous studies and cases of stress, it has been criticized a lot. Now, this does not at all mean that the SRRS is useless or anything of that nature, but many people criticize it and challenge its assumptions that undesirable life events are no more stressful than desirable ones. Many also say that a handful of the items on the SRRS are very vague, for example, the death of a close friend could involve the death of a long-absent childhood friend that requires little social readjustment (Dohrenwend, 2006). Despite many criticizing and challenging the contents of the SRRS, it still remains one of the world's most well-known instruments in the big study of stress. Moving on to Chapter 15 of Module 7, I will discuss and describe the basic features of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). There are many systems that have been developed for mental disorders, but the DSM-5 is the one that is used the most by mental health professionals in the United States. DSM-5 is the fifth edition published, and it was published in 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association. The DSM-5 includes many sections that thoroughly elaborate on mental disorders, such as anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and dissociative disorders. Each section that describes a mental disorder gives the diagnostic features, diagnostic criteria, what percent of the population is
thought to be afflicted with the disorder, and the risk factors that come with the disorder. Unlike the previous editions, the DSM-5 provides information on comorbidity, which is the cooccurrence of two disorders. The DSM-5 includes 237 disorders, and many people believe that if more were added it would begin to make it seem like normal human problems would be listed as mental illnesses. The information given on the DSM-5 and its differences from previous editions took up quite a bit of chapter 15, and I learned a lot from it, and I was extremely interested in how mental health professionals how came so far and researched so much in less than a century. The last thing I will discuss in this written assignment is psychotropic medication, which we learned about in Chapter 16. The first type of medication is Antipsychotics, developed in the 1950s. Antipsychotics treat Schizophrenia and other types of major thought disorders. Brand names of commonly prescribed Antipsychotics include Haldol, Mellaril, Prolixin, and Thorazine. The second type of medication is Atypical Antipsychotics, developed in the 1980s. These medications also are supposed to treat Schizophrenia and other types of severe thought disorders. The brand names of Atypical Antipsychotics that are commonly prescribed are Abilify, Risperdal, and Clozaril. The next medication is known as an Anti-depressant. These are meant for treating sadness/depression and anxiety. Commonly prescribed brand names include Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Tofranil, and Elavil. The next medications are Anti-anxiety Agents. These meds are used to treat anxiety and agitation that occur in OCD, PTSD, panic disorder, and social phobia. A few of the brand names are Xanax, Valium, and Ativan. The next meds are mood stabilizers, which are used to treat bipolar disorder. Commonly prescribed brand names are Lithium, Depakote, Lamictal, and Tegretol. Lastly, there are Stimulants, which treat ADHD. Common brand names are Adderall and Ritalin. I have personally taken stimulants for my ADHD, and they have helped my cousin, who also has ADHD, and I focus on tasks at hand and pay more attention in school, for example. As we have learned, there are many types of medication mentioned in Chapter 16 that help people with several types of mental disorders. In conclusion of not only this written assignment, but this class as a whole, I personally have learned a ton about psychology. In this assignment specifically I was able to relate to a lot of the information that talked about depression and anxiety treatments, as well as ADHD. I have had many rough patches in my life, and I was able to connect many of my personal experiences to this module, specifically. There was a lot of information to cover in Module 7, from the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, the DSM-5, and the psychotropic medications. PSYC-1030-UC6 has taught me not only a lot about psychology, but also a lot about myself.
