Theory-Feminist Presenting Problem - Deidre is a 22-year-old woman of African-American and Latina descent. She grew up in New York but currently lives in Kansas to attend college. Her doctor referred her for feeling anxious and tense. Her parents divorced when she was nine, and she lived with her mother. Her mother had mental problems with mood swings. Deidre feels as if that caused her father to stay away. She suffers from her fears of having the same mental condition as her mother. Deidre is dating Tom, and they have been together for almost four years. She is hiding a secret from him that she had an abortion after a party when she was 18. Hypothesis- Deidre is currently conflicted with her inner self. She does not have the confidence in herself to be outgoing. Even though she had the abortion, she regrets her decision by wondering how the baby would have been. Due to her feelings of being alone, she prefers to keep her secret instead of losing Tom because he is pro-life. Goals- Empowerment is a major goal of feminist counseling because it helps clients see that they have control over themselves and the ability to actively advocate for others (Herlihy & Cruz, 2022). Deidre will become empowered and boost her confidence. This will enable her to believe in herself and her decisions. She will stop questioning her decisions because she is so worried about what others think. Interventions- Identify the problem from their point of view Assertiveness training- This technique will help Deidre find her long-lost voice to speak up for herself. Through assertiveness training, clients learn to stand up for their rights without violating the rights of others (Herlihy & Cruz, 2022). Instead of feeling anxious and tense, Deidre will have newfound confidence in herself and around others. Gender-Role Analysis- By using this technique, Deidre can understand how her childhood upbringing impacted her life. She will become more aware of how society and her fears have formed what she feels she should be doing as a woman. By recognizing these, Deidre can identify what she wants to change to feel self-empowerment. Expected Outcome- Deidre will be more confident in the decision that she has made. She will learn what she wants out of life, what she expects from life, and what she will accept or not accept. Her dependence on her boyfriend will be lessened as she becomes more empowered. She will feel confident in herself and independent. She will not feel guilty for making the choice to have an abortion. If she chooses to tell Tom, she will be strong enough to accept it if he chooses to not stay in a relationship with her. References: Herlihy, D., & Cruz, T. (2022). Feminist theory. In D.
