PSY 215 Module Six Activity Template For this journal activity, you will focus on the influence of language on shaping perceptions of human behavior. Specifically, consider how the words we use can have a dramatic positive or negative influence on how we view the personality characteristics of others. Respond to each of the following prompts with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Address the rubric criteria listed in the Module Six Activity Guidelines and Rubric and support your answers with a credible source when necessary. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. We often consciously or unconsciously promote stereotypes about personality disorders during casual conversations. Consider the language used within your own culture (e.g., family members, friends, colleagues) when discussing personality disorders and imagine engaging in conversation about Jamal. Describe the language that might be used, as well as the thoughts and feelings that you might experience during such a conversation. When discussing personality disorders, respect the individuals involved in the conversation. Mental health is such a sensitive subject and has a certain stigma around it. Knowing a little of Jamal’s childhood and background allows me to have a better understanding of his behavior. I would avoid derogatory or judgmental terms. Instead use professional clinical language when discussing the symptoms or behaviors. I would encourage to not make assumptions and use first-person language emphasizing the individual before the condition. I would try to show signs of empathy and understanding and would feel uncomfortable if someone talked down about Jamal. Describe how the words we use to discuss personality disorders (e.g., “narcissistic,” “borderline,” “antisocial”) shape our perception of what is considered normal or abnormal. Provide an example with your response. The words we use to discuss personality disorders shape our perception of what is considered normal or abnormal in several ways. Words like “narcissistic” and “antisocial” are often used informally to describe negative or deviant behaviors in people. When these terms are just thrown around, they can foster stereotypes and stigmatization. The stigma associated with certain terms may discourage individuals from seeking the help they need. They may fear being labeled or judged as “abnormal” if they acknowledge their struggles. In the TED TALK “Borderline Talks Back” Coral More describes what its like being labeled borderline through poetry. She describes a suicide crisis where they just blew her off at the hospital because of the stigma being personality disorders. These stigmas come from the words we speak. Describe ways that you could enhance compassion, empathy, and acceptance for Jamal, and all people who struggle with psychological disorders. Include specific language that could be used in conversations to respond in a prosocial manner. Knowledge is the key to understanding. If we understand the disorders and the circumstances involved with the individual with the disorders, the better we can communicate with them and others. Being a good listener and showing empathy like you genuinely care about can build trust and acceptance. Don’t use words like crazy, weird, or psycho. Be sure to validate their feelings. Use language that will let them know u know their struggles or at least are trying to understand. Ask questions instead of making assumptions. Always use kind words. Avoid harsh language. 1
