Module 2 Assignment The Psychoanalytic Approach Approximate Completion Time: 60 minutes Value: 3% Assignment Instructions 1. Please review the module lecture materials and corresponding textbook chapter(s). 2. Please read the information in the syllabus about the assignments. It describes how to complete and submit your assignment and how it will be graded. 3. When you are ready, please answer the questions below in the space provided. 4. When you are finished, please submit your assignment as a Word or PDF file. Section 2.1: The Life of Freud (1856-1939) Which three aspects of Freud’s life interest you most? Explain why. The parts of Freud's life that I find most fascinating are his work on the psychoanalytic theory (which continues to have an impact on modern psychology), his relationships and personal life, as well as his struggles and controversies because they can reveal the person behind the influential psychoanalytic framework. Sections 2.3 and 2.4: The Levels and Structure of Personality What do you think about the levels and structure of personality being like an iceberg? It is, in my opinion, an intriguing and extremely helpful metaphor for comprehending the complexity of the human mind and the various levels of consciousness that exist inside it. Please be succinct and stay within TWO pages for the completed assignment. Please reduce the font size of your replies if you have more to add than what the space allows. Thank you!
Section 2.5: Anxiety: A Threat to the Ego Provide a detailed example of reality, neurotic, or moral anxiety from your life. I get reality anxiety out of a true fear of potential danger whenever I happen to walk alone at night in an unknown neighbourhood and see a group of people acting violently. When I'm given a task at work, I sometimes struggle with neurotic anxiety and a crippling dread of failing because I have an illogical fear of making mistakes and being judged by others. I have a strong moral conviction that lying is wrong, but I feel moral anxiety when I do it to avoid spending time with friends or family. Section 2.6: Defenses against Anxiety Give examples for three different defense mechanisms you have used or observed in others. The first example is projection. For instance, if someone is feeling angry, they could project their feelings onto others and think that everyone is always angry. Rationalisation is a further example. Instead of accepting any faults or mistakes on their part, someone who fails to get the desired result could rationalise their failure by attributing it to outside forces beyond their control. Denial is a defence mechanism, for instance, when someone is diagnosed with a terminal illness but refuses to believe or accept it, believing that the test results must be inaccurate or seeking second views to refute the diagnosis. Section 2.7: Psychosexual Stages of Development Which psychosexual stage makes most sense and least sense to you? Explain why. The phallic stage is the one that doesn't make the most sense to me since it emphasises early sexual and gender dynamics too much, at the expense of other significant developmental factors. The oral stage makes sense considering the mouth's developmental importance during infancy. Babies must be stimulated orally to survive, and their early interactions with care and feeding can have an impact on their attitudes and behaviours as they grow. Sections 2.8 to 2.12: Human Nature, Assessment, Criticisms, Extensions, Reflections From Sections 2.8 to 2.12, choose three topics that interest you most. Explain why. Criticisms, extensions, and reflections are the topics that I am most interested in. These three subjects provide many angles from which we might view psychological theories, enabling learning, igniting discussion, and advancing the field's ongoing advancement. Please be succinct and stay within TWO pages for the completed assignment. Please reduce the font size of your replies if you have more to add than what the space allows. Thank you!
