The motif of birds also hides and reveals aspects of Norman’s identity as a serial killer. It hides his true nature by creating a contrast between his outward appearance and his inner reality. He seems to be a normal, polite young man who runs a motel, but he is actually a psychotic murderer who lives with his mother’s corpse. It also hides his motive and method of killing by making him seem like an unlikely suspect. He does not use guns or knives to kill his victims, but rather a kitchen knife that he keeps in his mother’s room. He does not kill for money or revenge, but rather for his mother’s approval and jealousy. The motif of birds also reveals his psychological state and history by providing clues to his disorder and trauma. It suggests that he has a split personality that switches between himself and his mother, just like birds can change their songs or plumage. It also suggests that he has an Oedipal complex that makes him obsessed with his mother and hostile to women, just like some birds can mate for life or kill their mates.
