Asynchronous Assignment PSYC 101 Marissa Miller Critical Thinking: Should Social Media Help to Diagnose Disorders? 1. What do you think about utilizing social media to screen for mental health crises? Are there any situations in which a need for intervention could outweigh privacy concerns? I think that using social media to screen for mental health crisis could be beneficial but also could lead to people feeling violated and watched causing them to not even share how they feel on social media. I think there are definitely times where an intervention can outweigh privacy concerns especially if you think someone is about to harm themselves or others. 2. If your online activity suggests that you may have a serious psychological disorder, would you want the social media platform to communicate this to you? I think that personally that would annoy me and potentially lead me to self-diagnosis which isn’t healthy. Sometimes I use social media as an outlet for my feelings, but they can always come across a lot different than I am meaning it to. TikTok News Brief 3. What do you think of TikTok’s new initiative to increase access to trustworthy information about mental health? I think that TikTok’s new initiative to increase access to trustworthy information about mental health is great because sometimes people can get in a funk and then videos, they are watching can encourage unhealthy behaviors. I think that having a reminder about mental health resources is always great. 4. What are the pros and cons to obtaining mental health information from platforms like TikTok or Instagram? You could potentially get biased information if not paying attention to the sources. So, in reality you could get information that is not beneficial to you or you could self-diagnose because of it, instead of going to a doctor. Videos on Schizophrenia 5. What stuck out to you the most after watching these videos/ what are your biggest takeaways? (Be specific!)
Asynchronous Assignment PSYC 101 Marissa Miller I didn’t know that there were so many different symptoms associated with schizophrenia. I thought it mainly pertained to hearing and seeing things that weren’t there, but I didn’t know it also had cognitive effects like memory loss and affecting your ability to learn and understand. It is much more vast illness than I first originally thought.
