1 PSY 355 Module 3 Discussion Post In your own words, how would you define implicit bias? Implicit bias is a naturally occurring bias not rooted in nature or nurture. Implicit bias affects our judgments. decisions, and behaviors. It seems that everyone is biased in one way or another. Is bias a product of human nature? Why or why not? Bias is a product of how our brain works (Suttie, 2019). Our experiences in the world seep into our brains over time, and without our awareness, they conspire to reshape the workings of our minds . Children learn to recognize their own races facial features from birth and associate those features with safety and security. Cognitive biases are our brains attempt to simplify the information being fed to it for processing. What is the role of positive and negative stereotypes in group relations? Stereotypes contribute to a dysfunctional class system ( Why Stereotypes Are Harmful , 2023). When we put stereotypes into a group, we either build up or tear down our coworkers. When we put a positive spin on a person based on any feature (college degreed are better able to do this job, Asians are better at math and science, etc), we set that person up for failure if they don’t meet those expectations in our minds. When we use a negative stereotype (they are millennials, so they don’t have the drive) then we lower the expectation of an individual being able to complete a task within the group dynamic. These stereotypes lead us to base what one person can do based on what people similar to them can do, instead of basing what a person can do on their persuasion. Identify a population for which you have a positive stereotype and describe the stereotype (e.g., all Canadians are nice and polite). How could having a positive stereotype generate a negative reaction from a person of that in-group? A population that I have a positive stereotype of are Filipinos. Filipinos are usually nurses or teachers . Having this positive stereotype could generate a negative reaction from someone in this group who wants to be a rockstar but feels pigeon-holed into being a nurse or a teacher. Instead of asking what a Filipino teen wants to be, I might
2 accidentally ask if they are planning on being in the medical or education field . This could come back on me negatively because this person might think that I don’t think they have the skills to be a rockstar. How does the concept of stereotypes apply to any of the following programmatic course themes: o Social justice- Implicit bias affects how people act with people of another race. If we use stereotypes in our day-to-day lives, we risk judging others. Stereotypes prevent us from offering everyone the same opportunities based on our subconscious. o Ethics- Stereotypes in ethics can influence moral judgments. In working in the field of Psychology, making uninformed judgments about clients can lead a provider down the wrong path in developing a treatment plan. References Suttie, J. (2019, March 29).
