PSY 211 Module Three Activity Template In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe a specific behavior that you learned in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? Learning how to drive is something we all learn how to do around the ages of 16 and 17. I was given an oppurtinuity to practice at a driving school. Before this I haven’t really learned how to drive but could work on cars to a certain degree. With the knowledge I learned from driving school it actually helped me to become a more focused driver and to foresee things that could happen on the road. Learning how to drive became second nature with some of the things I would do behind the wheel. Explain whether the conditioned behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? A few years ago, I was involved in a car accident. This accident wasn’t too bad but it shook me up enough to drive a little safer through traffic lights, as you can compensate for someone elses driving. For a few months I was not able to drive. This is a negative affect because how it affected my driving, but it is also postive as it can help me out in similar situations that can help me become a better driver. Describe a specific behavior that you changed in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? For years, I was smoking and growing up doing my own resaerch, has helped me understand that I should quit. From there I was able to change my habit based of research I conduicted and changed from smoking cigarettes to vape. Little change but can provide a big difference later in life. Explain whether the change in behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, and if it is something that you would like to change again, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? 1
Choosing to stop smoking or at least change the way you get your nicotine is a postive change in behavior. I think about my future with my childern, and have choose to slow down on what i intake. This change is going to help me with my health, and mental problems. Explain why one of the behaviors described above is an example of classical conditioning (Watson), operant conditioning (Skinner), or neither of these. Address the following in your response: o If one of the above types of conditioning applies to your example, which specific features helped you to identify it? o Explain why this type of conditioning is most effective in learning or changing this behavior. o If neither type of conditioning applies to the behavior, why is this the case? Explain your response in terms of specific conditioning features (e.g., stimulus, response, association) or inherent aspects of the behavior itself. Smoking is considered classical conditioning, Because smoking can be associtated with different feelings, or events that have happened around smoking. This can help with stress relief but you trade off health at the same time. In terms of smoking, a person can learn to associate smoking with other feelings and events (such as being in a stressful situation or having a coffee) and these situations then automatically induce cravings and ‘cue’ his or her smoking behaviour.
