Title: Dichotomous Thinking and Personality Traits: From the Viewpoints of the Big Five and HEXACO APA citation: Mieda, T., & Oshio, A. (2021). Dichotomous Thinking and Personality Traits: From the Viewpoints of the Big Five and HEXACO1,2. Japanese Psychological Research , 63 (3), 219–226. https://doi.org/10.1111/jpr.12299 Introduction: Why does this topic matter? What are the constructs involved? What theories or models guide this paper? What gap does the article try to address? - This topic matters because dichotomous thinking is linked to violence and prejudice in human history. Understanding the personality traits that go hand in hand with this type of thinking can be beneficial in understanding why certain people are prone to violence. - The constructs involved include dichotomous thinking, the big five personality traits model and HEXACO, and the links between Cluster B and Dark Triad personality traits and dichotomous thinking. - The theories and models that guide this paper are that individuals with certain personality traits from the HEXACO model and the Big Five model are more likely to portray a dichotomous thinking style. - The gap this article is trying to address is why there are some personality traits that are positively linked to dichotomous thinking and others that are not using the HEXACO model and Big Five model. Hypotheses: - The hypothesis of this paper is if participants feature personality traits such as the Dark Triad and Cluster B personality disorders, then they will be more inclined to dichotomous thinking. Methods & Results: Who are the participants? Why use this sample? How were the constructs operationalized? - The participants of this study include 221 undergraduates (181 females and 40 males). - This sample is used because the study wanted to focus on a group of participants with a small age gap and because it was easy to recruit participants on a college campus. - The constructs are operationalized by multiple
What did participants do? What was the design? Which results support the main conclusions? What analyses were exploratory, which were planned? scales focusing on personality traits and dichotomous behavior. - The participants were asked to do a questionnaire survey. The design for this survey was a survey focusing on HEXACO personality traits using a five-point scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) and a survey focusing on Big Five personality traits using a seven-point scale. - The results that support the main conclusions include the positive correlation between Dark Triad personality traits and dichotomous thinking, and the negative correlation between dichotomous thinking and personality traits such as honesty- humility and agreeableness. - The analyses that were exploratory include the differences between the same personality traits and its relationship with dichotomy from the HEXACO model and the Big Five model. The analyses that were planned include the relationships that personality traits have with dichotomous thinking. Discussion: Were the hypotheses supported? Based on what evidence? What are the implications? What limitations do the authors include? - The hypotheses were supported based on the results of this study. These results include the positive relationship between dichotomous thinking and personality traits such as neuroticism, extraversion, and emotionality. - The implication of this study is that there is a connection between Dark Triad personality traits, such as neuroticism, and dichotomous thinking, which is proven by the results of the study. - The limitations that the authors include are that there are more females than males in the sample which could affect the results, which could be fixed in future studies by examining the gender difference of the correlation structure, and that the study was not suitable for examining the relationship between dichotomous thinking and facet-level scores of the HEXACO-60 since this study used a shortened version of the model. Summarize: Write your own abstract (100-250 words) for the article Dichotomous thinking is an individual’s propensity to think in terms of binary opposition. It is seeing the world in black or white, good or bad, and all or nothing. There is no gray area, which usually leads to prejudice and a tendency for violence. Dichotomous thinking can be split
