1. Describe the ways in which grit, resilience, and coping skills are essential to any advocacy effort. When advocating for a cause grit, resilience, & coping skills are essential to success. Grit can be defined as having courage & determination. You must display these strengths in character when fighting for a cause. You must be determined to help those who can’t help themselves and have the courage to fight against those who may hold higher power or have better resources than you. When fighting against those who have better resources than you or benefit from the current laws, procedures, policies set in place, you will run into obstacles or attempts to block the progression of your cause. This is where resilience comes into play. Resilience can be defined as the amount of toughness a person displays or the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties or obstacles. When fighting battles and fighting for those facing oppression it is necessary to remain focused on your goal. Having resilience is what make keeps the fight going and ultimately ensures growth and success of making changes happen no matter how little they are. Coping skills are essential because with tough fights failures may occur. Having a growth mindset is an example of a great coping skill because it will allow a person to not see these failures as fact but will uses these failures as learning opportunities to make changes to their approach when advocating for change. Coping skills allow for a person to be okay with setbacks or insults that may occur. 2. Describe how you would apply the principles of emotional intelligence for collaboration in your advocacy efforts. Emotional intelligence can be broken down into 4 areas including self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, & relationship management (Radtke, 2022). To effectively advocate for a cause, I must create interactions and relationships with people who share my belief as well as with those who hold opposing views. Being self-aware means that I am understanding of my own personal feelings which may include conscious and unconscious biases. Understanding my own emotions allows for better collaboration because I can then better empathize with those with similar and opposing views heightening my ability to see other perspectives. Having social awareness allows for me to understand social cues that may affect those I am interacting with. I must be careful not to offend others when advocating. I must understand how others feel about the possible changes I want to see happen and how those changes will affect them. I must find common ground or meet in the middle with opposing views ensuring effective collaboration. Self-management allows for me to be able to handle my own emotions when dealing with emotions such as frustrations or anger that may come with collaborating. Even though I may feel a certain way I must be careful in the expression of our emotions & behaviors to ensure effective & efficient collaboration with others. Relationship management allows me to collaborate effectively by being able to use clear communication in hopes to maintain good relationships & connect with others with opposing ideals. To promote change relationship management is essential due to the multiple interactions it takes to spread awareness.
3. Describe the psychology subdisciplines that are most relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of your advocacy efforts. The psychology subdisciplines that are most relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of my advocacy efforts include cognitive & social psychology. Social psychology is the discipline of psychology that aims to study about how people’s thoughts, feelings, beliefs, intentions, and goals are constructed within a social context by interactions that they have with their environment (Psypathy, 2021). Cognitive psychology focuses on mental processes such as problem solving and reasoning. I must use both of these subdisciplines to truly understand why people are for or against the cause I would be advocating for. With social psychology, I must think about how a person’s environment plays apart in their decision making & behavior. Human behavior is influenced by others which may influence a person’s decision to support what I’m advocating for. Majority rule or social norm can determine the causes people support. With cognitive psychology, I use this to understand a person’s reasoning and also determine their ability to problem solve and establish common ground for the issue at hand. 4. Describe the ways in which your knowledge of psychology has prepared you to execute your social change initiative. My knowledge of psychology has prepared me to execute my social change initiative due to gained knowledge of understanding of the way others may think. Understanding the population I’m advocating for and against, allows me to show empathy & consideration of cultural differences. When advocating for change I must understand how the change will affect those who don’t support it. With knowing who I’m going against, I understand the biases and opposing views I face. With greater knowledge of how people think ,I am able to tailor the way I advocate to fit certain demographics. Psypathy, T. (2021, December 4).
