PSY 328 Module Three Activity Template First, read the Shapiro Library article Introverts, Extroverts, and the Complexities of Team Dynamics . Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe examples of observable behaviors (e.g., communication or working styles) of introverts and extroverts in a workplace or school setting. Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. Include the following in your response: o Do you think people can exhibit both introverted and extroverted traits, depending on the situation? Justify your response. Observable behaviors in school or workplace setting of extroverts would be things such as talking over someone else, using group work as a social time, or simply being friendly and talkative to everyone. Behaviors of introverts range from being quiet in meetings or class when group participation is involved or completing work designed for everyone by themselves. I do think it’s possible to exhibit both introverted and extroverted traits, as I feel like I do in my own life. I enjoy being social and talkative, but also know the importance of listening to other’s thoughts and feelings. While I like to be in control of most situations, I know there must be times where others, especially those more introverted, need to share the space. Describe the benefits of having introverted or extroverted managers or teachers . Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. Include the following in your response: o Be sure to list a benefit of having an introverted manager and a benefit of having an extroverted manager. o Consider how you would approach building a relationship with a manager or teacher that exhibits different extroversion traits than you do. Having an extroverted leader, whether than is a manager or teacher, could be beneficial when you need ideas or have concerns/questions that you are unsure how to voice for yourself. A benefit of having an introverted leader would be that you know they will listen to you when you need it most, along with truly hearing your thoughts and ideas instead of trying to do it all their way. As an extroverted leader, I approach relationships when those leading exhibit different traits than I do with an open communication on how we both work to see where we can reach a mutual agreement if we do things differently! Describe the benefits of having introverted or extroverted team members . Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. Include the following in your response: o Be sure to list a benefit of having an introverted team member and a benefit of having an extroverted team member. o Consider how you would approach building a relationship with a team member that exhibits different extroversion traits than you do. There are many benefits of having a good balance of both introverts and extroverts on your team, whether that’s school, socially or in the workplace. Benefits of having introverted teammates would be their keen eye for detail, their ability to listen and understand different angles, as well as having someone who thinks about their responses carefully before answering. Benefits of extroverted teammates are having expressive personalities which diversify the team, they are usually strong leaders in group settings, they’re also inclined to speak out loud when they think, eliminating elements of surprise. There are many types of 1
extroverts and building relationships with other extroverted people, if done correctly, can result in a powerful and communicative team! Our assigned reading Introverts, Extroverts, and the Complexities of Team Dynamics gives an example of how Amazon has 20-30 minutes of quiet reading so that they can all be on the same page, which is a great example of using a technique that can create a powerful, yet organized, train of thought from all our extroverted teammates. Describe how a manager or teacher might engage both introverted and extroverted individuals and motivate them on the team or in the classroom. Justify your response. Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. A manager or teacher might engage and motivate both introverted and extroverted individuals by controlling the narrative. As we noted in the Amazon example, controlling the narrative by starting with silence and writing out what everyone’s narrative for the classroom or workplace so that everyone has a fair chance to say what they’re thinking or feeling. Creating a “safe space” for all students and employees can motivate all involved because the introverts have time to analyze what’s going on and possibly build enough strength to use their voice. Meanwhile, extroverts have an organized time to think and organize their own thoughts and plans of action where they can give a thought-out response instead of the usually quick and unplanned answer. Making sure that both personalities can thrive is all up to the designated leader. Describe a benefit of using emotional intelligence skills in the workplace or classroom. Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. Consider the following in your response: o When would you need to use these skills and why? o How do they empower you to navigate stressful situations? o How do these skills influence your mindset? In my own experience, having strong emotional intelligence skills has allowed me to be a leader in the workplace and with peers. Being aware of different situations, opinions voiced, and needs of all those involved has allowed me to diffuse any escalated situation quickly and create a way for all parties involved to feel understood and heard. I know that having a strong team can ensure victory, whatever that may mean in the given situation. Having strong emotional intelligence allows me to create a space for open and trusted communication, which is the number one key to success in every aspect. Explain how an increased awareness of the introversion and extroversion of yourself and others helps you be more effective in the workplace or school setting. Your response should be 3 to 5 sentences in length. Increased awareness of my own and other ‘s personalities, both extroverted and introverted, helps me be successful at work and school because I am aware of both traits and can put myself as a mediator when conflict occurs. Being an observant extrovert means that I know which qualities are stronger and more beneficial from both sides and can bring them together for the greater good. I’m approachable enough that introverts can confide their thoughts and feelings in me while also being straight-forward and vocal enough that extroverts tend to listen to what I say and respect my opinion. Being the mediator can be emotionally and mentally exhausting at times, but hearing and understanding both sides ensure for a smoother run. 2
