PSY-102 Psychology in Your Life Topic 1- General Psychology Careers in Psychology Directions : After reviewing the Topic 1 Class Resources, answer the following questions below. Each response should be 75-150 words . Support your responses with a minimum of two peer- reviewed or scholarly sources (i.e., the textbook, articles located in the GCU Library articles, or other class materials). APA formatted in-text citations and full references are required. 1. Describe a subfield in psychology related to your major or career path. (For example, if you are a business major, you might explore Industrial Organizational Psychology). A subfield in psychology that relates with the career path of speech pathology would be rehabilitation psychology. This relates to speech path because it explores solutions for people who have disabilities to maintain a healthy, productive way of life that initiates adaptation and the much-needed support for people who have experienced chronic illnesses and disabilities (APA, 2014). Being able to assist those who have experienced traumatic life altering situations and working through the mental side of those issues will be helpful when teaching children, the correct ways of speech. 2. Describe the role of a psychologist who works in the subfield. (For example, what does an IO psychologist do? Describe their tasks, who they work with, environments they work in, populations they serve, etc.) The role of a rehabilitation psychologist varies between their working environment but typically their focus is in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, health care centers, and assisted living facilities. These psychologists have a specialized comprehension on how to care for those who physically and mentally cannot care for themselves (APA 2022). They aide in distinct disabilities and well as family or team dynamics. They are able to serve a very versatile community of people which allows loads of experience and background information for how to properly diagnose clients. 3. How does this subfield complement your major? In what ways might the work of a psychologist in this subfield impact your future career? This subfield complements the major of psychology with the goal of earning a master's degree in speech pathology in the future because learning about how to properly demonstrate and explain the importance of working towards better ways of living. Applying rehabilitation psychology to speech pathology will guide those conversations on how to properly use tongue muscles to pronounce words correctly, or having gentle interactions with people who have special needs in teaching them how to properly navigate language while modifying certain exercises due to
circumstances. All of these examples stem from the important lessons taught in rehabilitation psychology. 4. Describe another subfield in psychology related to your major or career path. (For example, if you are an Information Security major, you might explore Quantitative Psychology). Another subfield in psychology that is related to speech pathology would be Developmental Psychology. This would aide very well for speech path since this type of psychology focuses and keens in on people with developmental disabilities and how to properly assist in growth. Obtaining background knowledge on the developmental side of the brain and how to help that child progress and adapt is vital for the speech side of the brain. This will impact the career of a speech pathologist because learning the proper strategies of how to communicate and teach someone who has disabilities specific life skills is vital. 5. Describe the role of a psychologist who works in the subfield. (For example, what does a quantitative psychologist do? Describe their tasks, who they work with, environments they work in, populations they serve, etc.) The role of a Developmental Psychologist is to initiate change and growth within people of all ages who struggle with disabilities. A day-to-day task for someone who works in this area is interacting with parents and the patients to formulate a proper plan that will instills substantial progress in the clients’ abilities. Developmental Psychologists work in he althcare facilities, schools, government agencies, mental health clinics, and even homeless centers (Psychology School Guide, 2022). Developmental psychologists partake in research on the emotional and social changes that occur during the stages of growth. Psychologists keen in on how children comprehend their emotions specifically or how unhealthy emotional tendencies occur. 6. How does this subfield complement your major? In what ways might the work of a psychologist in this subfield impact your future career? This subfield complements Speech Pathology because especially dealing with the people who have speech disorders due to disabilities having the knowledge of how to properly initiate growth and a plan specified towards those with disabilities will be helpful. Also, the idea of becoming an autism specialist is still present then developmental psychology will aide in the necessary knowledge of adhering to the mannerisms that occur with autism. This subfield can help detect signs of autism or any abnormal decreases in development.
