Describe the key concepts, therapeutic process, and strengths and limitations of psychoanalysis and Adlerian therapy. Based on your program of study, present an example of how two techniques or interventions from each counseling theory may be effective in helping a client experiencing anxiousness and adjustment issues. Sigmund Freud is considered the father of psychoanalysis, key concepts being making the unconscious minds of individuals conscious, as well as improving an individual’s behavior by focusing on reality rather than perceived biases. Psychoanalysis focuses on discussing and analyzing one’s childhood experiences and learning new behaviors that may be associated with the experience. The transference relationship is one technique that can be utilized in the psychoanalytic therapy process. The counselor is supposed to hold neutrality throughout the session to prevent the client from projecting. Corey, G. (2023) states, “…holding a consistent setting or ‘frame’ plays a large part in this analytic technique” (p. 77). Another technique that could be vital throughout this therapy process is “free association.” This allows the client to speak on any topic they can think of without “self-censorship”, all while lying on the couch, providing a sense of speaking alone and preventing the client from seeing the analysts’ facial expressions or projecting from their body language. Alfred Adler is known to be the founder of the Adlerian theory. The Adlerian concept is that in the first six years of an individual’s life, they develop their personality traits primarily based on social interactions and the importance of relationships. When involved in Adlerian counseling, a client-therapist relationship is most valuable when considered as equals “based on cooperation, mutual trust and respect, confidence, collaboration, and alignment of goals” (p. 127). Another technique that may be effective for clients during Adlerian counseling is gaining insights into their problems and behaviors. This is vital as they develop a deeper level of self-understanding, resulting in learning new behaviors to overcome the original issues later. A strength of Adlerian counseling is that it holds no bias to clients’ ages; anyone can work through it. However, a limitation is that it emphasizes early childhood rather than the present time.
