PSY 211 Module One Milestone Template In the Module One Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Compare the psychological factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development. o Consider their cognitive and affective factors in your response. There are numerous psychological factors that influenced both April and Judi’s development. The girls were raised in two very different environments. April was raised in a stable, supportive, and loving environment with caring parents who nurtured her development into a happy and healthy individual. Meanwhile, Judi was raised in an unstable and unsafe environment with an abusive, alcoholic father and a mother who suffered from mental health issues. Judi’s parents likely did not nurture her development in a healthy manner. In this environment she saw addiction, abuse and mental health issues which she internalized as “normal” and in turn developed these same issues in adulthood. Compare the social factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development. o Consider their relational and environmental factors in your response. As children, Judi and April saw very different relationships and learned very different social cues. Judi grew up with dysfunctional parents and seeing abuse which later influenced her own choice in partners and ended up in abusive relationships. However, April grew up with two loving parents who seem to have had a very healthy relationship with each other and April. This influenced April to seek out a significant other that she could also have a healthy relationship with. Explain whether nature or nurture had a more significant role in April’s and Judi’s development. Support your answers with examples from the scenario. o Consider using biological, psychological, and social factors in your response. In this scenario I believe that nurture had a more significant role in April and Judi’s development. The two girls were born healthy identical twins therefore the role nature played create an even playing field for the two girls. When they were adopted by two separate families they were nurtured in drastically different ways. Judi’s environment was dysfunctional, chaotic, and abusive which mirrors her abusive, unhealthy, and unhappy adult life. Whereas April was raised in a healthy, loving, and caring home mirroring her now healthy, happy, and fulfilled life. Explain why it is important to consider nature and nurture in combination throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s well-being. 1
The reason it is important to consider both nature and nurture when evaluating an individual’s well-being is because both play a vital role in development. We can use epigenetics to better understand this. “Epigenetics is like nature and nurture shaking hands” ( Nature vs. Nurture in Child Development: Roles of Genes & Environment 2023). Nature is how we are influenced by our genetics. Nurture comes into play with the external influences on our lives. This includes the environment in which we are raised, life experiences, and parental influences. The environment around us can influence our genes in certain ways, for example, someone raised in a city with high pollution would be more susceptible to more health concerns than someone raised in a rural area. In combination, both nature and nurture are vitally important to consider when evaluation an individual’s well-being. 2
