P SY 211 Module Three Activity Template In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. · Describe a specific behavior that you learned in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? The external stimulus that affected my behavior is when I hear people yelling. While I was grow- ing up my mother would often yell at myself and my siblings if we were getting on her nerves, got bad grades or if she got upset with my dad. She would yell very often which made me hate the sound of yelling altogether.Ive always struggled or seen it as a red flag if my boyfriends would get loud with me or be disrespectful in any way rather it were an issue or not. Now with my own kids, I try my best to not yell and not have them to grow up in a house like I did. I also saw that I would get very quiet as a child when I heard yelling and hide or walk away from it. I didn’t know at the time that I was being influenced by it. Now I can see that if my husband and I get in an argument over anything, I would rather walk away and regroup later than just get more upset and start yelling infant of my kids. · Explain whether the conditioned behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? Some positive steps that I have taken are as I said earlier, stepping away from the situation and making sure that I calm down instead of just jumping to get upset and yelling. My husband has a very deep voice and at times it can seem that he is yelling when he really isn't . I have also saw that by removing myself, it has shown my kids to react the same way. My kids are learning a better way to deal with stress in loud environments and that alone is a great thing for me to see. · Describe a specific behavior that you changed in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? Another external stimulus that has affected my behavior has been the greta Daylight Savings. This is one that has made me feel just so groggy and tired at all times of the day in the fall. I became aware when I went from being so full of energy to struggling to wake up in the mornings and absolutely needing a nap throughout the day. My 3 kids are a handful and I could normally get through the day just by having a good coffee or energy drink and when the time switches, I find it harder to keep up with them. 1
· Explain whether the change in behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, and if it is something that you would like to change again, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? This one was a negative behavior. I found that I was less productive due to the time change and then I began trying to help schedule myself to do things at certain times each day to help me out. I also tried to look at it from a point of view that I needed to get things done earlier with the sun being so bright earlier in the day, this helped me to get ahead on my house chores so when the kids get home from school I have more time with them. · Explain why one of the behaviors described above is an example of classical conditioning (Watson), operant conditioning (Skinner), or neither of these. Address the following in your re- sponse: o If one of the above types of conditioning applies to your example, which specific fea- tures helped you to identify it? o Explain why this type of conditioning is most effective in learning or changing this be- havior. o If neither type of conditioning applies to the behavior, why is this the case? Explain your response in terms of specific conditioning features (e.g., stimulus, response, asso- ciation) or inherent aspects of the behavior itself. I think the Classical Conditioning (Watson) applies to my first example. Watson believed the all individual differences were due to different learning experiences. This is why Watson Classical Condition- ing applies to my first example of yelling. I learned that yelling will defeat you as a child, this will cause you to run and hide or walk away like I did. By seeing this so young, it helped me to learn that I shouldn’t always jump to conclusions and I should learn to think about my situations that I am in, instead of getting mad and yelling back. 2
