This study was done to figure out Veterans’ understanding and perception of skin cancer. They also wanted to see how it would be best for them to be able to educated on skin care and what communication is needed with this specific population. In comparison to the general population, Veterans have prolonged exposure to the sun because of the kind of work they are doing. In this study, 94% of the veterans did understand that skin cancer came from sun exposure and 63% of them realized it was important to wear sunscreen as a preventative measure (Fisher, McGrath & Krejci-Manwaring, 2015). However, when they asked if they thought they were at risk of getting skin cancer, they thought that they were at little to no risk. To emphasize, these veterans are not getting the proper education that they need about skin cancer prevention and safety measures to be taking while out on the battle grounds. These veterans in this study stated that they wish more skin cancer education would be done during “Basic Training First Aid Training” (Fisher, McGrath & Krejci-Manwaring, 2015). They stated specifically that using images would help make veterans understand the importance of this. This could be done through a PowerPoint, putting images up of what skin cancer could potentially look like if they were to get it. The other teaching sessions I had planned were discussing coping strategies for stress and anxiety with support role systems tied into it. The “Coping, Family Social Support, and Psychological Symptoms Among Student Veterans,” article by Romero examines how different coping styles and family support can effect anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress (Romero, Riggs & Ruggero, 2015). They discussed three different coping strategies that student veterans often used and one of them being problem-focused coping. This coping strategy allows the individual to modify or get rid of the stressors in their life. It is an adaptable strategy allowing the individual to be able to make changes and alter it for their own personal use.
Another topic discussed was the benefits of family support systems when people are under stress or at risk for developing mental disorders. Recent research has indicated that if veterans have the support systems in place to assist them, their levels of PTSD, depressive symptoms, or anxiety disorders may be reduced (Romero, Riggs & Ruggero, 2015).
