Refer to Chapter 8 of Groups: Process and Practice and share how the use of role-plays among group members could affect the stages of group development. (Share an example using at least one stage of group development.) What purpose could role-play serve for individual members and for the group as a whole? While a group is in the working stage, role-playing has many advantages in group therapy. It allows group members the opportunity to try new behaviors, discuss previous experiences from the past to address them here and now, and allowing group members an opportunity to act in another’s place to attempt to adjust their perspectives. These role-playing exercise allow individuals the opportunity to work through their vulnerability’s, traumas, and personal crises surrounded by those who they feel safe and supported with. If a group can effectively engage in role-play it can bring the group closer together and allow other group members the opportunity to address any emotions that may have triggered from the group member’s role- play (C orey & Corey, 2018). However, if the group doesn’t effectively engage in the role-play such as a group member being disrespectful in the role-play could negatively impact groups trust and sense of safety. This is where it is detrimental for the group leader to be present in the here and now and assist group members is appropriately resolving conflict and maneuvering their emotions during times of vulnerability. When other individuals are experiencing moments of healing and growth, it may also inspire other group members that progress can happen and it just takes time, patience, and consistency.
