Discuss how you as a group leader will use self-disclosure in the group setting. How will you attend to transference in your work as a group leader? The reasons for self disclosure need to be for the benefit of the client and not the therapist. As we spend more time with our clients, the vulnerability will change. The client will be looking to connect with their therapist on a little deeper level the longer they are in therapy. In addition, the therapist may have family pictures on their desk which may illicit some questions from the client. In a group setting, it may be a feeling that the therapist shares with the group such as, "I am so impressed with the progress that you are making as a group." This can help the group to work cohesively in the norming stage (Sutton, 2021). Transference is unavoidable in therapy and can be both beneficial and detrimental. If the therapist is nurturing and compassionate and one of the group members struggles with their primary mother relationship, the client can feel cared for by the therapist in a way that they did not expect. They may become more vulnerable as a result and work through some difficult things. The therapist should be open about what is occurring. Detrimentally, if a member of the group reminds another member of an abusive spouse, this can inhibit growth for both of those members and create more conflict within the group. The therapist needs to be cognizant of what is happening and address and redirect those thoughts. Good boundaries will be necessary in order to prevent things from escalating or getting out of hand.
