2 Moral Development and Dilemma State of Moral Development Moral development is known as a process in which people go through to determine right from wrong. Both Piaget and Kohlberg had different ways of describing moral development. “Piaget studied how children understand rules” (Kuther, 2023). He developed two stages of morality. Kohlberg proposed that children construct their understanding of fairness through their interactions with others” (Kuther, 2023). His three levels focused heavily on posing hypothetical dilemmas about justice, fairness, and rights that place obedience to authority and law in conflict with helping someone. We were given a dilemma to tell our interviewee, then was presented with a set of questions to ask. After presenting the dilemma and reviewing the answers, I can say that my interviewee leaned more towards using Kohlberg’s Theory and levels of moral development. In the six questions presented my interviewee showed stage one: Avoiding punishment and stage four: Law& Order Morality. She said that Heinz shouldn’t steal the drug under no circumstances because it doesn’t belong to him. The person making the drug is still human and it is morally and unlawful to steal even if it’s for the name of love. If Heinz was the person who created the drug, then he wouldn’t want anybody stealing from him. She believes that there is always a legal way to save someone’s life. If the druggist had a change of heart, maybe he would make some type of deal with him. Reflection I do believe that this is an accurate assessment of my interviewees level of moral development. This is a person who I have known for a very long time. A god fearing women who believes in doing right no matter what situation that she is faced with. There is always a legal
3 way to get things done or multiple legal ways in which you can acquire assistance if needed. The stages of Kohlberg’s model are comprehensive enough to interview my interviewee. I had no issues identifying the different stages of moral development. Everything was adamant and clear in the dilemma presented to us. When I initially started reading the dilemma, I already saw many different facial expressions and gears turning. My presence did not influence the responses to the questions that were asked. This individual always sees and considers justice, fairness, and rights that place obedience to authority and law in conflict with helping someone. A developmental psychologists or mental health professional might utilize this information to assess a person’s true ability to understand the concept of right from wrong. Utilizing this model alone will not be enough to assess a specific personality or characterological issue but it can be used in conjunction with other models and assessments to get a more clear and accurate answer. Position According to Kuther, a popular criticism of Kohlberg’s theory of moral reasoning is that the initial research was done utilizing only boys. That being said, men and women have different approaches to moral development. There was a lack in care orientation. “Care orientation is characterized by empathy, desires to maintain relationships, and a responsibility to not cause harm” (Kuther, 2023). Kohlberg’s theory also focuses more on the western aspect than the non- western aspect, which can present bias. Western cultures believe in the rights of the individuals whereas, non-western cultures individuals believe in human interdependence. However, collectivist cultures focus on the moral dilemma of the whole community instead of a single individual. I believe that Kohlberg’s theory does not take account for atypical development to accurately allow the assessment of a person. I always say that every individual is different,
