Week 8 Dialogue Wendy Lipps College of Arts and Science Regent University PSYC 406 Group Facilitation Dr. Pamela Robinson, Ph. D. June 28, 2023 Week 8 Dialogue This week we learned about what training is needed to be a group leader. There are five key roles in supervisory. They are educators, sponsors, coaches, counselors, and directors. The APA guidelines for clinical supervision goals were to capture the performance expectations for psychologists that supervise. Supervisors must be competent as professional psychologists and clinical supervisors (APA 2014). Supervision is for treatment, assessments, and other activities of health services in many different settings. These were developed and organized around seven domains. They are supervisor competence, diversity, relationships, professionalism, assessment; evaluation; feedback, problems of professional competence, and ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations ( Newman, C. F., & Kaplan, D. A. (2016 ). A supervisor is responsible for ensuring the protection of the public, which cannot be achieved without competence in supervision. This can be achieved through specific training in clinical supervision. This helps develop attitudes, skills, and knowledge needed to supervise (Falender, Ellis & Burnes 2013). For my group, I chose Substance Use and Addiction Groups. The population that is served are individuals that are 18 years of age and above that use have substance use and addictions. Groups are usually 25 sessions or last 6-8 weeks with 2-3 sessions a week for
individuals that have an addiction. The support groups for substance use and addiction groups allow for family and others to attend the group if the meeting is an open meeting. Closed meetings are for the members only (addicts). These groups are endless in the length of the group and have a turnover of members who do not have a set amount of time. A supervisor for substance use and addiction groups will coach, mentor, evaluate, observe, and inspire. They will also create an atmosphere that promotes learning, self- motivation, and maintaining professional development. They resolve conflict, shape agency culture, create cohesion, and build teams while attending to diversity and ethical issues in all aspects of the process. To be a supervisor for substance use and addiction groups the scope of practice needed is 1.) Clinical evaluation, including assessment, screening, and diagnosis of substance use disorders (SUDs) and Co-Occurring Disorders (CODs) 2.)Referral. 3.) Treatment planning for SUDs and CODs, including ongoing, initial, continuity of care, discharge, and planning for relapse prevention. 4.) Client, Family, and Community Education. 5.) Service Coordination and case Management in areas of SUDs and CODs. 6.) Counseling, trauma-informed care, therapy, and psychoeducation with individuals, families, and groups in the areas of SUDs and CODs 7.) Documentation. 8.) Professional and Ethical Responsibilities. 9.) Clinical supervisory responsibilities for all categories of SUD Counselors. (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment. Clinical Supervisors 2007). Administrative and supervision overlap significantly in substance use and addiction treatment settings (Powell 2004, p.11). There is also the level of education needed to be an Independent Substance Use Disorder Treatment Counselor/Supervisor. The level is a Master’s degree or other postgraduate degree
