Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 Jermica M. Davis Eastern Gateway Community College PSY 201: Child Development Chapter 13 Reflection Paper September 28 th , 2023
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2 This week we learned about marijuana and the affects that it has on adolescents when taking the drug. Some of the side effects from doing marijuana can be long lasting and influence some development delays in the adolescent. What is Marijuana? Marijuana is an hallucinogen also known as psychedelic. It comes from a natural plant and once inhaled it can cause hallucination and causes mild intoxication. It enhances sound sight and smell and gives the sensation of things slowing down. Marijuana when consumed at a young age can slow down growth development in the brain that hasn’t fully developed as an adolescent. The many negative effect of marijuana use is adolescents are difficulty thinking and problem solving, problems with memory and learning, impaired coordination, and difficulty maintaining attention. This could lead to students not performing well in school, getting lower grades or even drop out of school due to school becoming overwhelming. Smoking marijuana also increases the risk of mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. And lead to a potential of addiction which would lead them depending on the drug daily. This is why it’s important to teach adolescents how significant it is being drug free and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
