2 Demographic summary Aileen Wuornos was an American woman, who was born in 1956 in Rochester, Michigan (Biography,2023). She is known as one of the most notorious female serial killers in the United States. Her immediate biological family consisted of one brother, a mother, and a father her parents were not a part of her life or her sibling. She was raised in Troy, Michigan in the care of her maternal grandparents alongside her brother (Biography,2023). As a result of the lack of stability in her family environment, Wuornos was unable to achieve any significant educational accomplishments. At the tender age of 11, Wuornos started engaging in sexual transactions with her school friends in exchange for various items. As a result, she discontinued her education at the age of 15, while she was only starting her first year of high school (Wessel, 2021). Throughout her adolescence, she lacked consistent employment. Aileen Wuornos established her residence in Florida, where at the age of twenty she married a 69-year-old man. (Myers et al. 2005). Biological factors Antisocial personality traits have been shown to correlate with those of individuals who engage in criminal misconduct (Jones, 2005). An examination of Wuornos's parents reveals the potential source of her antisocial inclinations: either hereditary or acquired through her surroundings. Wuorno’s father was a convicted sex offender who suffered from schizophrenia and killed himself while serving time in jail (Wessel, 2021). While her mother, who was an alcoholic with the burden of raising two kids by herself, decided to abandon her children, This left Wuornos and her brother in the care of her maternal grandparents. According to Winsper & Woke (2014), the prevention of children from developing subsequent behavioral issues is
3 significantly influenced by the quality of parent-infant relationships. Wuornos was exposed to situations that are inappropriate for a child, including abandonment, rape, and neglect at the hands of primary caregivers, from an early age. The adults in her life whose responsibility was to care for her and her siblings were absent and failed to provide her with protective factors. This may have implied Wuornos’s antisocial behavior or even created such behavior. Being that her father was a convicted molester and suicidal, Wuornos may have carried those mental deficiencies genes as well. At 22 years old, she attempted to end her life by shooting herself in the abdomen after a romantic rejection (Myers et al, 2005). Looking at Wuornos’s behavior in school is also an indicator of her antisocial tendencies. Rather than attending school to learn, she would sell her body to her peers to maintain herself financially. causing her to become an outsider amongst her peers and even more antisocial. Developmental factors Before her birth, Wuornos experienced an innate predisposition towards an inferior quality of life. At the time of her birth, her parents were adolescents and lacked the necessary resources and knowledge to properly raise a child. It is of importance that a child is under the guardianship of at least one parent. Wuornos lacked both. In all aspects, her immediate family was utterly dysfunctional. Due to his criminal propensities and mental illness, her father was excluded from Wournos' life. Due to her alcoholism, her mother abandoned her children, leaving them in an abusive environment. In addition to being raised in an abusive environment, she was malnourished, which is an essential provision for any child under the care of a guardian. She was kicked out by her abusive grandfather and resorted to sex work as a means of supporting herself to survive. Her early exposure to these conditions in her environment might have contributed to
