Neuroanatomy of the human CNS Assignment 2023 2. On which hemisphere are Broca’s and Wernicke’s area located? Define the function of each. (/2) Both Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas are located in the left hemisphere. Broca’s area is involved in speech production, and Wernicke’s area is associated with language comprehension. 3. The Primary visual cortex is located around the calcarine sulcus (present within the Occipital lobe). (/1) 4. What types of cells myelinate axons in the peripheral nervous system? What types of cells myelinate axons in the central nervous system? (/2) The Schwann cells myelinate axons in the PNS whereas the oligodendrocytes myelinate the axons in the CNS. 5. The subcortical white matter is classified into three categories: (/3) Association fibres are confined to the same hemisphere. Projection fibres connect the cerebral cortex to subcortical structures. Commissural fibres are fibres that connect the two hemispheres. 6. What is the function of cerebral white matter? What composes the cerebral cortex gray matter? (/2) The function of the cerebral white matter is to transmit undiminished signals and information within the different regions of the brain, and it does so via its myelinated axons which serves as insulators of electrochemical signals. The densely packed neuronal cell bodies compose the cerebral cortex gray matter. 7. Name a division of the peripheral nervous system that is being used when you smell something. (/1) The sensory (afferent) division, specifically the olfactory system is used when we smell something. 2
