PSYC 201, LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT Name: Kendall Clinton NICK JACKSON COMPREHENSIVE ASSIGNMENT, STEP 1 SELECTING A SCENARIO AND A THEORETICAL ORIENTATION (15 points available) As described in the introduction and overview document that you just read, in this step you will select one of the three scenarios below and a theoretical perspective through which to address the scenario. You will then provide a detailed explanation for why you think this theoretical perspective can help you address the problems described in the scenario. I personally would choose scenario one compared to others. I think B.F. Skinner’s developmental theory is a great example of how this issue could be sorted out. Timmy is struggling to learn due to an undiagnosed learning disability which is leading to conflicts in the classroom. His teacher in my opinion would be considered the reinforcer in this situation. She keeps removing Timmy from the classroom in hope to fix his behavior, but without consulting his mother or the school. I think she is a negative reinforcement, because she is taking him away without resolving the central issue with the whole conflict. I think proper treatment is required for the issue to be solved, not in any developmental theory. B.F. Skinner's developmental theory pulls closest just due to how the reinforcers are working. He is being pulled from a situation he probably considers positive without knowing that it is probably for the best. I think the

teacher's viewpoint is probably the best, and just requires some communication between both the parties to sort out the best method of treatment. With a disability it is a much deeper issue that has more layers than anything socially developmental.
