1 Module Four Activity Christina Porter Southern New Hampshire University PSY 222: Research Methods in Psychology Amy Coyle September 30, 2023
2 Module Four Activity Research Study: Workplace Wellness Programs Can Generate Savings 1. Summarize the research study’s purpose . Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Through employer's health care insurance, workplace wellness programs can improve health and reduce absenteeism costs, thereby generating savings. A workplace wellness program reduced health care costs on average by $53.27 for every $1.00 invested (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). “$2.73 is the cost of reducing absentee costs for every dollar spent” (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). 2. Describe the relevance of the publication dates of the citations referenced for the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Are some of those cited sources recent (relevant to date of publication)? A cross-reference or scholarly source was used to verify the publication dates of citations referenced in the research study. Their sample research study cites 32 publications from the past thirty years (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). In 2008-2009, sources cited surveys and references from prior years relevant to this research publication. 3. Identify the type of claim the research study makes. Explain your response. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Is the claim frequency based, association based, or causal? A causal claim is one that indicates that the research study is the result of a cause-and- effect relationship (Morley, B., 2018). 4. Describe the research method used in the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Is the research method qualitative, quantitative, or mixed? A quantitative research method is used to collect empirical data from the research of scholarly sources in this study, with a focus on "method of delivery and intervention" (Baicker, K., & Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). Using pre-post intervention data to collect and analyze results (Baicker, K., & Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). 5. Describe the research study’s data collection method. Your response should be about 50 to 100 words. Consider the following: Possibilities for data collection include surveys, observations, interviews, archive review, objective or biological measures, or some combination of those listed.
3 A sample of over one hundred studies was used for the data collection process for the research study. By reviewing archives of scholarly sources and surveys, we reduced the sample size to 32 journals with 36 studies and used statistics to identify correlations with the authors' sample. According to Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D. (2010), the health risk assessment survey was based on “self-reported data from employees”. The results of the clinical screening of employees' cholesterol, blood pressure, and body mass index were obtained from Baicker, Cutler, and Song (2010). 6. Describe the research study’s sample . Your response should be about 50 words. Include the following in your response: Sample size Sample characteristics A total of 90% of employee wellness programs at large firms with more than 1,000 employees were examined in this study (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). A total of 14 wellness programs were examined for employers with more than 10,000 employees (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). Based on the results of this research study, the sample characteristics included a variety of industries such as finance - 25% and manufacturing - 22% (Baicker, K., & Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010). 7. Describe one type of statistical analysis conducted in the research study. Your response should be about 25 words. In this research study, a descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on the data gathered from four exhibits based on the authors' calculations. Data, such as employee absentee rates (Baicker, K., & Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010), were summarized using charts and tables (Baicker, K., & Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010) 8. Describe one limitation from the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. There is a limitation to this research study called publication bias. "It is difficult to gauge the extent of publication bias, with programs with high returns on investment most likely to be written about and studies with significant findings of positive returns most likely to be published." (Baicker, K., Cutler, K., & Song, D., 2010, p. 309) 9. Describe how this research study could be used in personal and professional practice . Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: How can the findings from this study be used by people in their work, in their personal lives, or to help others? This research study on workplace wellness programs would be beneficial in both personal and professional practice. The research study is information regarding
