Field Experience C: Practical Implications of IDEA Meeting with School Psychologist I met with the school psychologist on my campus Brad Tally. When talking to him we discussed his roles on campus and how IDEA played a role in his job when working. He mentioned that the main role of his job was doing evaluations on the students. These evaluations include initial and every three years for students who are on IEPS. He mentioned he attends IEP meetings to communicate his findings with teachers and the parents. He then recommends what the test results indicate. If the testing confirmed the student is eligible for an IEP he will recommend that this ultimately is what happens. Meeting with my Mentor Dean Of Students I also met with the Dean of students on my campus James Tasso. He mentioned that IDEA was a part of his daily work routine. Dealing with discipline many times he will have to set up manifest meetings when a major incident happens. It ultimately is his job to ensure that when dealing with discipline it still stays within the students IEP. He also mentioned that when IEP meetings happen he or one of the other Administrators have to sit in on the meeting. The IEP meeting will not meet minimum standards if there is not a school administrator present when it happened. He mentioned that the three administrators on campus divide the IEP meetings up equally. He also said that they try to keep the same administrator with the same student throughout their IEP at the school. Reflection During my observation I have gained a further understanding on how critical IDEA can be as a school leader. It is essential that not only you are following the principles of IDEA but also all the staff members on campus. My goal is to become the Dean of students on campus in a year and a half when the position opens. I learned essential characteristics that are required for IDEA when working with students that are on an IEP when dealing with disciplinary actions are taken. One of the most important things I learned was when expelling a student for extreme behavior such as multiple fights a manifestation meeting must be made before the expulsion hearing. This allows the school psychologist, parents, administrators, and at least one general education teacher to meet on behalf of the student. This will determine whether the school needs to move forward with an expulsion or not. This situation will include PSEL standard 5. This standard is ensuring that every student on campus is safe and will have the highest chance of success as possible. It also allows every student an equal opportunity and will allow students to feel valued while on campus. When a student is dangerous on campus you have to take the entire student body into consideration and sometimes expulsion is needed to maintain the safety of all students. PSEL standard 7 will also be included in this area because as a leader it is essential to trust the teachers and staff while on campus. When a student has multiple fights and behavior issues on campus many times it will get documented into a database. This can be used as evidence when an expulsion is happening. As the leader you need to be able to trust what the teachers have input into the database. Overall as the leader on campus it is always essential to follow all laws and procedures that have been put into place. References
