Psych 1205 UNIT 7: SMART Discussion Department of Health Sciences University of the People Instructor: Joe Juarez October 23, 2023 My chosen emotion is Patience, and the SMART goal related to developing this emotion is to: Improve my patience threshold, increasing the amount of discomfort and inconveniences I can handle daily. This goal is SMART (University of California, 2017), because it is: Specific: I have specified what emotion/skill I want to improve upon: increasing my patience overall. Measurable: I’ll keep track of how often I feel annoyed at a person, or when I feel like something is bothersome, no matter how big or small it is. I’ll assess how often I can communicate my irritation with a person, whilst being assertive and empathetic, without being
judgmental. I plan on improving my patience by 1% every day; this would make me 37 times better 365 days after day one (Clear, 2015). Achievable: This goal is achievable because it is realistic and specific. It is also something that I am motivated to achieve. I know that this will help improve my outlook on life, as well as help me have healthy personal relationships (Gaines, 2021). Relevant: This goal will help me improve my quality of life overall. With higher patience, I can work harder, disregarding how boring or uncomfortable a task is, because it needs to get done. With patience, I’ll be able to improve my focus and do menial tasks with a better attitude. Time-bound: I plan on improving my patience by 1% every day. Initially, I will not seek out uncomfortable situations, I will just handle the ones that present themselves, once I feel I have substantially improved, I will pursue tasks that challenge me from different directions. How to better achieve my SMART goal: I will seek to better understand my roots for lack of patience, through internal dialogue, but also through therapy. I’ll discuss past scenarios with my family where they felt I was impatient. Hopefully we can identify recurring factors that led to my frustrations. I will also keep a log of my thoughts prior, during, and after feeling a lack of patience or frustration with myself, a task, or another person. In conclusion, i want to improve my patience to help foster better professional and personal outcomes. By improving my patience, I will be able to stay focused for longer, and be able to deal with people even in unfavorable situations. By taking a multipronged approach, from personal assessment, family assessment, and professional help, I hope to improve my patience by 1% every day.
