Stroebe's dual process model includes problem-focused and emotional-focused coping. Both processes are deemed ways individuals cope and handle loss. Therefore, those who manage their coping processes one way may not always be the same as those who are around them. They all cope differently based upon what they know and how they know that person. It is important to note that some may deal with loss multiple ways; it is that person's connection to another that may alter the way in which they cope (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2019). Problem-focused loss is an approach individuals take by coordinating a problem with the loss. For instance, Sally's death has caused multiple problems throughout the community. There are stray cats everywhere and no more family meals. Someone coping with the loss of Sally sees these problems and may look for solutions to fix said problems. Such as finding homes for they stays that she used to save or institution of family meals themselves. Emotional-focused coping consists of evaluating the emotions the loss has brought up. For instance, Fred's death causes others to feel sad because people miss him. It would be about helping them through the new emotional attachment of sadness that is needed for evaluation (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2019). Kail, R. V., & Cavanaugh, J. C. (2019). ISBN-13: 9781337554831 REPLY First off I wanted to say great post, I feel like you bring up quite a few points that would be beneficial to anyone who reads them. For example, one comment that stuck out to me was in your second sentence when you are discussing coping. As you said, all individuals cope differently, using varying techniques and strategies to help overcome their grief. This is a vital concept for counselors to understand when assisting grieving
clients as failing to grasp this could result in harmful therapy. Due to the insurmountable differences in coping strategies amongst our clients, it is vital that counselors learn how to progress through therapy when at the client's pace, making sure to not push them too far (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2019). In doing so, the counselor and client can competently work through processes such as Stroebe's dual process model at the pace of the client, ensuring competent treatment is provided. Anyways, again thank you so much for your post this week, Georgia. Good luck with the rest of this class! Reference Kail, R. V., & Cavanaugh, J. C. (2019).
