WHAT IS SOCIAL COGNITION & SELF-AWARENESS Social cognition pertains to the comprehension of mental states in oneself and others, encompassing emotions, motivations, desires, and sentiments. This necessitates developing a theory of mind (Zelazo, PhD, 2023). Social cognition makes up various stages, starting with a child’s own perception during early development without considering another person’s emotions or feelings. However, as they grow and develop an increased ability to understand people's actions in social situations - social psychologists noted different outcomes for children from diverse cultures. By interpreting behavior displayed around them, youngsters learn from the experience before proceeding to act based on their interpretation of the situation thus reinforcing cultural norms that mold their perspective on society. STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT Piaget proposed a theory that elucidates the progression of individuals' cognition, comprehension, and discernment from infancy to adulthood. He christened this concept after his own name as he scrutinized children across varying stages of development to apprehend insights into our learning process (WebMD, 2023). The four stages of cognitive or intellectual development, as proposed by Piaget, are: 1. Sensorimotor Stage (Birth – Age 2) 2. Preoperational Stage (Ages 2 -7) 3. Self-Awareness/Self-Monitoring Self-awareness means understanding your feelings, thoughts, behavior and how others see you. It is important to develop self- awareness early in life because it can benefit a person for their whole life. When kids are self-aware, they learn to look at what they do and decide if they need help or not. They also know when things fit within their abilities so they can accomplish tasks on their own more easily. To encourage children's interests and creativity parents should support them by letting them participate in extracurricular activities which will improve skills while helping build up confidence through enhancing the child’s sense of himself/herself. Teachers play an essential role too through individualized goal setting based on pupils' strengths outside the traditional learning environment! Learned Helplessness & How to Avoid When kids ask for help from their teachers or parents or keep asking if they are doing something correctly (Greer & Wethered, 1984). If a child develops learned helplessness, it can lead to heightened levels of depression, stress, and reduced self-confidence in their capability. To deter such behavior from forming, teachers and parents must offer available resources for children to use as aids. For students not to rely on others too much present them with learning opportunities so that they work towards finding answers themselves - families alongside educators can ease this process by working cohesively together. Lastly employing question-based teaching techniques instead of furnishing solutions outrightly makes room for multiple attempts after failures are recorded till an answer is found by the student himself/herself. -
