Jennifer Duckworth Project Two Psy-491- Psychology and Social Change Professor Pravatta 11/21/23
Project Two Grit, resilience, and coping skills Being an advocate is a challenging task. Advocating for something I believe in attempting to make a social change is even more challenging. A social change that I would like to advocate for is animal homelessness and banning breeding. Too many humans irresponsibly allow their animals to breed and then either sell them or let them loose on the streets. They eventually end up dead or picked up and housed in the humane society, many never knowing what a home or love is. “ Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed every year because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes.” ( 11 Facts About Animal Homelessness , n.d.) Grit, resilience, and coping skills would be necessary for me to have on my mission due to how challenging it would be. This would be difficult mentally emotionally and physically, which would require many skills. Grit would allow me to persevere towards the goal. Resilience would allow me to bounce back when things got difficult, or I was met with disappointment and coping skills would help me to deal with the stress that would come along. Principles of emotional intelligence Emotional Intelligence is one of the programmatic themes and is the ability to manage our emotions and effectively and efficiently understand the emotions of those
around us. Having a high level of emotional intelligence helps me to create and build mature relationships, communicate with others, and avoid conflict. I can apply the principles of emotional intelligence in my advocacy efforts by utilizing the main components of emotional intelligence. Self- awareness, self- regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. (Pritchett, 2023) By using self- awareness I will be aware of my emotions and how they can impact the people around me. Self-regulation will help to regulate my emotions and not allow myself to become overwhelmed in situations of high stress. I can use motivation to stay motivated and keep the people around me motivated while keeping the social change initiative in mind. I will use empathy by putting myself in others situation and understanding how they may be feeling and what they may be going through and I can use social skills while advocating by communicating well and listening to others. Psychology subdisciplines Throughout my education here at SNHU I have had the amazing opportunity to gain knowledge about the many subdisciplines of psychology. While doing so I have learned that there are some that are relevant to my future and some that may not be. Either way, the knowledge has been a great learning experience. A few that will be relevant to my advocacy efforts would be social psychology which helps to understand individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and how they are influenced by others. Community psychology is helpful I believe to anyone and everyone because it is focused on how we impact our community and how it impacts us. Also, developmental psychology would be helpful in my advocacy efforts because it studies the changes that occur throughout our lives. ( Psychology Subfields , n.d.)
