The four most effective tests used to diagnose learning and communication disorders are, intelligence tests, achievement tests, visual-motor integration tests, and language tests. (Vienna , 2022) The intelligence test measures “intellectual ability and variability in cognitive functioning.” (Vienna , 2022) It measures someone’s ability to think and solve problems in certain situations. It also measures someone’s general knowledge, reasoning and vocabulary. The tests that are usually used are the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children and adolescents under the age of sixteen and the test used for anyone over sixteen is the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. These tests are usually performed by a licensed psychologist. (Vienna , 2022) The achievement test measures a person’s academic skills and knowledge in a specific area after a period of learning or training. This could be a form of a standardized test or a comprehensive test. There are some common tests used to determine if someone has a possible learning disability-Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement (2-90+ in ages), Wechsler Individual Achievement Test and the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement. . (Vienna , 2022) These tests are usually given by teachers through exams and other ways to evaluate their learning/grade level. The visual-motor integration test measures someone’s ability to integrate visual and motor skills. It is commonly used to test if a student has a nonverbal learning disorder. The Beery- Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (2-8 years old) is what is used to test children. This test can be given by an administrator. (Vienna , 2022) Language tests measure a person’s oral and written language skills. The Clinical Evaluation of Language and Fundamentals is what is usually given to test a student’s skills. (Vienna , 2022) A test administrator (speech pathologist, special education teacher and a school psychologist can give the test to people in the ages of 5-21. (Wiig , 2013)
