Week 5 Discussion: Video Discussion This week, the readings helped us to understand the key developmental issues that are associated with sibling relationships and friendships. For this discussion, compare and contrast these groups and address the following in a 3–4 minute video: What are the key factors to understanding the impact of each type of relationship throughout the life cycle? What benefits and challenges are associated with these kinds of relationships across the life cycle? Identify a friendship or sibling relationship in your life (past or present) and provide one example interaction or experience from that relationship that illustrates a key concept from this week's readings. *Include verbal references to resources from the course that are connected to the content above. Refer to Using Kaltura for instructions on recording and uploading your video in the course room. Video Post Notes- What are the key factors to understanding the impact the relationship throughout the life cycle? Sibling Relationships: The relationship one has with the members of their family of origin plays a key role in later life. Age spacing, Gender differences, gender roles, sibling position, number of siblings all influence a individuals life course and the relationships they develop with others including their future children. Competitiveness, or rivalry is a key factor that impacts sibling relationships. As will most all things in this field, culture, race, and social class impact what is expected of sibling relationships. It influences such things as how close siblings are, caretaking responsibilities, and the level of loyalty. Friendships The text also spoke about how the quality and stability of our friendships seem to be connected to the quality of relationships in our families of origin.
Attachment research has consistently shown that children who have not experienced a securely attached relationship to a caregiver find forming and maintaining high-quality intimate friendships much more challenging than children who are securely attached. Gender differences in friendships, with girls experiencing more stress when expectations are not fulfilled. What benefits and challenges are associated with these kinds of relationships across the life cycle? Sibling Benefits: lifelong friendship with siblings, possibly a built in best friend. Someone who has been through very similar experiences, and you can relate to. Companionship, intimacy, joy, emotional support Sibling Challenges : rivalry and conflict in childhood if not resolved can cause strain throughout adulthood. Friendships Benefits: Friends enrich our lives with intimacy, companionship, laughter, and joy. supportive friendships increase self-esteem. Emotional and functional support and companionship. Friendships Challenges : Increased social pressure complicate efforts to build friendships adding to the complexity and emotional intensity of this developmental period. Hard to maintain in adulthood with focuses shifting to career, creating a family and romantic partners. Integrating romantic partner into friendship relationships and the struggle of merging two worlds. Divorce challenges friendships and social networks. Identify a friendship or sibling relationship in your life (past or present) and provide one example interaction or experience from that relationship that illustrates a key concept from this week's readings. Now when looking at my life the relationship I have with my brother really stood out to me when reading the text. Sulloway (1996) as Quoted in McGoldrick, Carter and Preto Page 174 stated that “children who are closest in age have the greatest competition and rivalry for their parents’ care; therefore, the second sibling has the greatest need to differentiate from the older to find a niche for him or herself.” Doing differing things than Michael Wrestling and Cross country, I was good at cross country but chose soccer and softball instead.
