Explanation of the importance of identifying internal and external barriers of the client and social worker According to Geller and Greenberg (2012), it is important for a Social Worker to know the client’s internal and external barriers so that when providing services for the client you do not triggers the client to go back to old habits or make the client feel uncomfortable. therapists are taking in the depth of the client’s experience and accessing and attending to their own internal experience as a key indicator in understanding and responding or offering an intervention from moment to moment (Geller and Greenburg, 2012). Describe the barriers experienced by Helen and the social work intern The barriers Helen and the social work intern experienced is age and communication. I said age because Helen feels as if the social work intern is too young and does not have enough experience, but as Social worker we have to respect the client’s opinion/beliefs regardless of how we feel. I said communication because Helen is taking over conversation, not allowing the intern to voice any input. This could also be because she thinks the intern is young and incapable of helping her effectively. Also, Helen failed to communicate that Alec is probation and I feel if this was communicated the social worker would’ve suggest him to go stay with the Helen’s mother-in-law (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Suggest ways the intern could overcome these barriers I believe the way the intern can overcome these barriers by meeting with her supervisor to inform her on how Helen feels she it incapable of doing her job effectively and get feedback on how to continue to help Helen if assigned to do so. I would also ask the supervisor to sit in on the next session being that she is a intern so that she can gain knowledge on how to handle the different situation Helen throw at her hands on. I feel the supervisor coming in on the next session and voicing feedback will allow the intern to learn how to handle situations of that natural for future clients. Plummer, S.B.
