REFLECTION PAPER 1 Unit 1 : Reflection Assignment Department Of Psychology, Athabasca University PSYC 300 : Theories Of Career Development Dr. Louis Svenningsen
REFLECTION PAPER 2 Introduction This assignment is to help recognize my own career development theories, as well as expand my knowledge on the subject. This assignment will help me to better understand how the choices I have made have led me to achieve my career goals. While answering all of the questions provided to me in this assignment, I have decided to use open-minded answers that are as thorough as possible. Part 1 : Client Perspective 1. What influences operated on my career development as a young person? Personal experiences have heavily influenced my choice to get my diploma in Child and Youth care work, as well as work towards my degree in Psychology. I grew up in an environment filled with manipulation and emotional abuse. These factors in my life have pushed me to help other children that may be stuck in these types of situations, and to also better understand why some people manipulate, belittle others, etc. I hope that my knowledge can one day help not only myself but help others. 2. How have I integrated these influences? My own personal experiences have helped me to better understand the side of a victim, and the needs of a victim in this situation. I have also questioned my mother who has gone through similar experiences, her perspective helped me to understand her and how this trauma shaped us into the people we are today. She helped lead me down this career path and has always been my biggest motivator. My father is another influence, he

(In other words, tell the story of your career development.) I have volunteered at a shelter for abused women and children for a few months. I completed my Child and Youth Service Worker Diploma, I am now in my first year working towards my Bachelors Degree in Psychology. I am starting a job soon working as a youth coordinator at an FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) center. This job will help me to connect with youth, and also provide them with support whenever they need it. 4. What are the patterns and themes of my career development? According to Holland's Social Theory of Vocational Choice, people should select jobs that complement their personality traits and areas of interest. Holland distinguished six personality types, each of which was connected to a specific profession. I matched the social personality out of the six based on how I was mentored in my work and personality. These people are loving and empathic, and they enjoy helping others. They are frequently drawn to employment in social services, education, and counseling. 5. What is the role of work in my life? Work helps to establish financial stability so that I can provide for my children, but it is so much more to me than the money. It is building connections with others, helping others when they need it and knowing that you are able to provide
REFLECTION PAPER 4 support. Being able to lift people up on their bad days but also expanding my knowledge with day to day duties. I have gained the most knowledge through personal experiences with others. 6. What other life roles do I hold, and what are my priorities? My most important and valued life role would be my role as a mother. I have 3 (almost 4) wonderful kids. I cook, clean, and provide my children with the utmost support, they will always be my top priority above anything else. My second role would be as a partner, my husband requires support at times as well and I try to be there for him when he needs me. My third role is my job and education, these roles are important to me because with both I can provide support and knowledge to others. 7. What conflicts are there among my life roles, and how do I resolve them? My major conflict among my roles is balancing everything. I struggle to balance my children, my husband, my education and soon my new job along with my other household responsibilities. There never seems to be enough time in the day to complete everything while still being the best mother and spouse I can be. To resolve this issue, I have split household responsibilities with my husband, and have also taught my children how to help tidy up. I make sure to always take some time out of my day to sit and play or read to my kids, no matter how much I have on my plate it is important that they get the attention they need at their crucial age of development. My husband and I plan a date night for the two of us once a week whether we go in or stay out, it helps us to reconnect just us two with no interruptions. I usually work on my school-work after everyone has
