Luchene 1 Final Paper: Application of Psychology Allison Luchene Department of Psychology, Ivy Tech Community College PSYC 101: Introduction to Psychology Professor Castillo March 2 nd , 2024
Luchene 2 Final Paper: Application of Psychology Psychology is all around us. Everything I have learned in this class can be found delicately laced throughout every aspect of life. I aim to illustrate the pervasive influence of Psychology and its relevance in various areas of my life by drawing connections between psychological research and real-life scenarios. In this paper, I will cover three peer-reviewed articles that touch on various aspects of Psychology. The articles I have chosen broach the topics of self-acceptance, intimate relationships, and workplace well-being. I will summarize the key findings of each article, then go on to illustrate how I can apply them to my own experiences. I’ve truly found that anywhere I look, Psychology follows. Psychology of Self-Acceptance – Article 1 Tylka and Wood-Barcalow did a wonderful job dissecting the relationship between self- acceptance and psychological well-being, defining self-acceptance as the act of embracing oneself fully, including both strengths and perceived flaws (Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015). They argue that this process is imperative for creating positive mental health outcomes. Self- acceptance involves recognizing one’s intrinsic worth and embracing both strengths and limitations with kindness and compassion. They put emphasis on the importance of shifting from self-criticism to self-compassion, as it allows people to create a deeper sense of self-worth. The authors outline the detrimental effects of self-criticism on mental health, emphasizing the need for cultivating self-acceptance as a protective barrier. The discussion delves into the various aspects of self-acceptance and its necessity for overall psychological well-being. Tylka and Wood-Barcalow explore how self-acceptance contributes to enhanced overall life satisfaction,
Luchene 3 Final Paper: Application of Psychology greater emotional resilience, and reduced levels of anxiety and depression. They discuss the role of self-compassion in promoting stress management and adapting coping strategies. Overall, the findings of the article underscore the importance of embracing oneself fully. In doing so, individuals can experience greater resilience, emotional stability, and overall life satisfaction. The research highlights the need for interventions aimed at fostering self-acceptance and self- compassion to enhance mental health outcomes and promote personal growth (Tylka & Wood- Barcalow, 2015). Application of Psychology and Self-Acceptance As someone who struggles with low self-esteem issues, this article was very helpful. One way I can apply the findings in my own life is by practicing a bit of humility in moments of self- doubt. I can try to treat myself with the same kindness and understanding that I would offer someone else, as opposed to judging myself harshly for any mistakes I may make. Additionally, I can work on challenging negative self-talk. Whenever negative thoughts come to mind, I can put in conscious effort to replace them with a more supportive and affirming internal dialogue. I can recognize that nobody is perfect. It’s okay to make mistakes and have areas in life where I may not feel as confident as others. I can gradually shift towards a more positive self-image by reframing those negative thoughts and turning my focus to my strengths. Furthermore, the article mentions embracing unique qualities, rather than trying to conform to unrealistic standards or expectations. I am lucky to be the specific person that I am
Luchene 4 Final Paper: Application of Psychology today. I can look at myself from a new perspective and see where I am useful just the way that I am. Finally, seeking support from trusted people in my life or a therapist can also be beneficial in my own journey toward self-acceptance. I already do these things but the research just reaffirms that I am moving in the right direction. Opening up about my struggles and receiving empathy and support can help me feel less alone. It also provides valuable insight on how I can improve in this area. Incorporating these strategies into my daily life can help me move towards a more positive and healthy relationship with myself. Psychology of Intimate Relationships – Article 2 This article dives into the implications of attachment theory for understanding love and communication within intimate relationships. The researchers explore how our attachment styles shape our romantic relationships in adulthood. It is discussed how important secure attachment is in fostering trust, intimacy, and effective communication. Insecure attachment styles, such as anxious or avoidant attachment, can lead to relationship challenges. The authors provide an overview of attachment theory and its relevance to adult romantic relationships. They discuss how early experiences with caregivers form our expectations and behaviors in these partnerships. The researchers propose that understanding attachment can offer valuable insights into the dynamics of communication and love within relationships (Feeny et al. 1994). Additionally, the authors bring up interventions aimed at promoting secure attachment and improving communication skills within couples. One of these interventions mentioned is couple’s therapy. The findings of this article show that by recognizing the influence of
