SCI 100 Module One Activity Template: Topic Exploration Instructions Visit the Science Daily website to choose a natural science–related news story published within the past six months on a topic of interest to you. Ensure the article meets the criteria provided in the Module One Activity Guidelines and Rubric. Answer the following questions about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Provide the title and link to your chosen news story so your instructor may locate it. The title to my article is: Whole exome sequencing predicts whether patients respond to cancer immunotherapy. Whole exome sequencing predicts whether patients respond to cancer immunotherapy: A two-step approach with sequencing of 20,000 genes improves prediction of who benefits from immune checkpoint inhibitors -- ScienceDaily Summarize the main idea of the news story you selected. This should only take 1–2 sentences. The main idea of the article is about a new two-step approach with exome sequencing to be able to better predict who will receive benefits from immunotherapy. Briefly explain any prior knowledge and what you’d like to know more about regarding your selected news story. The only knowledge I have of immunotherapy is what I have learned in the last few months, since my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 advanced lung cancer. I know that unlike chemo immunotherapies help the immune system in killing cancer cells. I do not know a lot except what I have briefly researched myself. I want to know more about who and who will not respond well to immunotherapy, for example, are some people predisposed to react better to immunotherapy? That is just one of a million questions I have. Discuss the value of the scientific research presented in your selected news story for contemporary society. The value of the scientific research in this article is endless. Lung cancer is one of the number one killers in our world! Cancer is a scary diagnosis no matter what type of cancer it is and it affects a lot of people in contemporary society so cancer research to find advancements in new treatments is vital. The research will help members of society who either have a cancer diagnosis themselves or a loved one who has cancer choose the best possible treatment plan for them. By being able to predict who and who wont benefit from immunotherapies saves a lot of time in the decision-making process, or trial and error of immunotherapy treatment. The research provides a chance at a more personalized plan for members who do suffer from cancer. 1
