1 2-2 Case Study Milestone One: Short Paper Tiarre Crawford Psy 200: Foundations of Addictions SNHU Instructor: 9/10/23
2 In this case client is a 35-year-old woman by the name of Katie. She is a wife and mother of two who is elevating within her career. Following her husband’s work accident Katie is forced with the responsibility of being the sole income provider, which puts a stain on the family. Client’s race and ethnic background is not referenced in the case study. Katie does not appear to have a process addiction such as obsessive shopping or gambling, etc.) although she is presented with an addiction to painkillers and muscle relaxers in which she often uses the internet to supply her addiction. She initially began taking pain medication for lower back pain which was a result from a car accident in her mid-twenties (Intervention Solutions, n.d.). Taking these pain medications somehow makes her feel better about her life and she chases that feeling by overindulging and abusing her prescribed medications, which leads to her addiction. Three years prior to current circumstances Katie spent four weeks in a residential treatment center for her addiction and appeared to be successfully rehabilitated upon her completion. Some of the reasons people are said to abuse prescription drugs according to the Mayo Clinic are… They want to feel good or get a high To ease chronic pain To be accepted by peers or to be social To relax or relieve tension To maintain an addiction and prevent withdrawals (2022). Symptoms of prescription drug addiction includes… Having mood swings Engaging in illegal activities to feed dependance Being less coherent Taking more than prescribed Loss of energy or motivation Neglecting oneself Drug dependency can lead to long term physical and or psychological damage. Prescription drug abuse not only affects the abuser, yet it affects every aspect of the abusers’ lives including their families, community, work life, social life as well as the society. In this case Katie’s addiction to pain medications has caused her to lose control of her life. She has hurt her family not only financially but emotionally as well. Her addiction has put her marriage in a fragile state and is at risk of divorce if she doesn’t agree to rehabilitation. Although it doesn’t discuss the state of her
