Module One Discussion 1-1: Hi everyone, My name is Allison and I currently work as a behavioral health technician in a psychiatric hospital, one of three that I have worked at now. I have experience in child protective services as well, but didn't find that to be my true passion. I have my B.A in Psychology with a concentration in Forensic Psychology from SNHU and am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Forensic Psychology. When I am not working, I enjoying spending time with my dog and 2 cats as well as taking my dog on hikes. I am taking this class as it is one of the requirements for my degree, however I also find psychological assessments and evaluations very interesting so I am very excited for this course! Since I work in a psych hospital, there are definitely psychological evaluations and assessments being used. A psychological assessment is not just limited to a test but rather includes tools like interviews, behavioral observations, interviews, and other specifically designed procedures (Cohen, et al., 2021). The first evaluation of one of our patients is done at the hospital, which helps to determine if they meet the criteria for inpatient treatment. One of the most frequently used assessment measures is neuropsychological tests where deficits in an individual’s cognitive functioning is being looked at (Richmond, n.d.). This allows us to view whether specific issues are related to underlying medical conditions or disabilities or if it is in fact mental health related. Once a patient has been admitted for 24 hours they receive a second evaluation from one of our providers at our hospital. Other specific clinical tests are also conducted to view more specific factors such as a patient’s anxiety or depression. During the patient’s stay they are constantly being observed by myself and other staff and behavioral differences are documented, including constant 15 minute rounds being done on the patient. On top of this, the patient is seen at least once a day by a doctor and psychiatrist and at least twice a day is individually interviewed by a nurse. As beneficial as the behavioral observation and clinical interviews are, the clinical and neuropsychological tests that are done are extremely crucial as it allows information to be gathered more easily, the information gathered is more scientifically consistent, and it reduces the chance of the patient getting away with lying (Richmond, n.d.). The combination of these assessments is ultimately the most effective way of assessing a patient at our facility.
