M2 Assignment 1: Family Constellation Families play a crucial role in the development of individuals in society. The different experiences and social interactions that individuals have with their family members impact their perception of the world and their personal development. Families often inherit typical behavior patterns because of various cultural and social traditions which are transferred from one generation to another. To understand and identify these patterns, systemic and structural family constellations can be conducted. Family constellations are particularly essential in revealing the influence of each member of the family in the development of the patterns. Apart from understanding the development of patterns, family constellations are crucial in helping to identify and reverse negative family behavioral patterns. From a personal perspective, negative family patterns can be addressed through the involvement of all the family members in the decision-making process, showing love and respect, as well helping one to abandon the negative belief systems (Devine, 2013). Through this process, individual family members will be able to break their isolation, be integrated back into the society, and make peace with others in case of any conflicts (Devine, 2013). Pattern refers to the recognizable set of behaviors, systems or procedures that recur and are logically connected with each other. It suggests that families tend to repeat specific patterns of behavior which can be traced across generations. These patterns often emerge due to cultural influences, religious beliefs, customs, and traditional practices unique to a particular family. (Walker, 1994). Families may have various patterns, influenced by their individual circumstances and family structure. These can include gatherings solely during holidays or celebrations, overlooking certain members' opinions in pivotal decisions, adherence to either
monogamous or polygamous marital practices, displaying favoritism towards specific individuals within the family unit and exhibiting signs of affection through physical gestures like hugging and kissing. Walker (1994) asserts that through this recurring pattern of hugging and kissing, future generations of the family will tend to do so when meeting each other. Alongside the family pattern, there are hidden family dynamics that can also be identified during the family constellations. According to Zimmerman and Schatten (2011), these hidden dynamics form the basis of the emotional system that significantly influences an individual’s behavior within the family setup. Family behavior patterns tend to have a long-term impact on all family members, not excluding the future generations. A good example of a family system that had long-term patterns is the joint family setup. In the ancient days, it was typical for the family to live in one region on a large piece of land and the property would be divided among the heirs of the family after the death of the parents. From there, each heir would develop their own family, but still, be as part of the original family. This would happen from one generation to another with each member sharing their issues and solving problems collectively as part of the main family setup. From the system, the family was said to have certain behavior patterns motivation by certain behavior traits. Based on personal observations, it is evident that families are often associated with specific patterns of behavior. The behavior patterns are passed from one family set to another as far as the same systems are running in the families. To identify how these patterns influence the perception, the views, and who one is as a person, understanding the role played by each of the family members is paramount. The uniqueness of each family member is defined by their individual personality traits. These traits stem from several factors such as familial relationships, cultural background, societal norms, and upbringing. Without a clear understanding of these characteristics, it can be
