PSYC-FPX3540 Implicit Bias Worksheet Consider how automatic components of implicit bias are present in the real world in your personal interactions with others (attitudes and behaviors), such as in conversations with friends or coworkers, or in the media, such as in the news. Choose two specific personal incidents and one you observed in the media, and, based on information from the Blaine and Brenchley textbook, think about possible causes of the implicit bias you observed and complete the following five tasks (omit identifiers, such as names of people or businesses): Instruction Your Answer Provide an example of a time when you observed possible implicit bias in a work or social setting, or in the media on a news segment or on an internet source. What cues led you to believe that implicit bias may have played role in this situation? *Explain one possible cause of the implicit bias based on information from our Blaine and Brenchley textbook. At work, we qualify applicants to receive federal benefits. There are a number of qualifiers that we use to screen applicants. These benefits are only for Medicare recipients and not all beneficiaries qualify for all of the benefits. I explain the fine print as best as I can, the most common response from an angry person who does not qualify is “If I were Mexican I bet they’d give me all of them, they give them housing, food, spending money etc..” or “They get treated better than us” The qualifiers are, you must have a social security number and must have worked in the U.S for 10 years or more. We do not give people benefits based on national origin. The book “Understanding the Psychology of diversity” explains that “Social categories guide social Judgment” Immigrants, especially Mexicans have been well categorized as beneficiaries of the public welfare system and society assumes we are all refugees who get everything for free. Provide an example of a time where you believe you, a family member, or a friend were stereotyped based on group status and/or social identity. How did you feel when the situation occurred? What if Ona positive light, I grew up in a “barrio” categorized neighborhood. The biased perception of one visionary led him to invest in a public library in my neighborhood. Our “underprivileged” school received an incredible donation of computers and a new science lab. The city; Albuquerque, New Mexico. The biased men who believed us to be under privileged Paul Allen & Bill Gates. I felt honored 1
Instruction Your Answer anything did you do? *Explain one possible cause of the implicit bias based on information from our Blaine and Brenchley textbook. as a kid, and I was able to adapt to computer language and functions at a faster rate than my peers in middle class because, well, they couldn’t afford the $500.00 item. As an adult I am still very grateful for being the exception. As a middle class American adult single mom, I can’t believe I don’t even qualify for free lunch because I live in a well-off neighborhood. I feel more underprivileged now than I did in the “barrio”. Describe a situation where your perceptions and/or reactions were shaped by implicit bias. Were you aware of the bias at the time or is it something you have considered in retrospect? Explain your thoughts. Were your implicit biases challenged? *Explain how your insight into the situation can help you in changing or shaping your personal or professional behavior for the future. As I watched the video on implicit bias, my jaw dropped, and my heart sank. I have a favorite niece: I have a fascination with afro puffy hair. I think afro puffy hair people are most beautiful. My favorite niece also has a beautiful afro!! There’re is no one like her in all our family. I call her “my beautiful.” She lets me play with her hair and style it and we bond. I recently learned that continuously bringing up how much I love her hair is an implicit bias. Nobody has mentioned anything about it. It is a compliment allowed and well received. Through the readings I learned that pointing out an ethnically unique feature, even if well intentioned is pointing out their race and ethnicity. That may be unwanted attention from someone receiving a compliment. Explain two or more strategies that can be used to prevent and combat implicit bias. *Use professional and scholarly sources to support the effectiveness of the strategies, and cite those sources. One of my lifelong strategies has been to work on my pronunciation. English as my second language has been a giveaway of my origin. Acculturation through language has been the survival method most rewarding. Growing up in a time where immigrants were quietly discriminated; society almost made it look like discrimination only happened to blacks. Language was my ideal way of not being categorized into certain groups. Assimilation has also been very helpful. I was too young to be attached to my Mexican heritage or roots or customs. Out of respect in the household we were indeed Mexican, but it was a family effort to assimilate 2
