2 Project Two Milestone Research Study: Anti-Equality: Social Comparison in Young Children 1. Select a peer-reviewed journal article and describe its relevance to you personally or professionally in about 50 to 75 words. The relevance of the journal article "Anti-Equality: Social Comparison in Young Children" to me personally is that I am a mother. As a mother I am always seeking to gain knowledge on how social interactions such as fairness can affect my children. Additionally, I found this article to give me insight to how children may choose to act when comparing against their peers' advantageous gains or disadvantageous losses. (Sheskin et al., 2014) 2. Describe the purpose of the peer-reviewed journal article in about 25 to 50 words. The purpose of this peer-reviewed article was to study different age groups and their preference to either receiving equal outcomes or that the other child receive less than themselves. 3. Identify the major methodological design of the peer-reviewed journal article in about 25 to 50 words. The study was conducted by creating a total of ten trials. Four Disadvantageous Inequality trials (DI), four Advantageous Inequality (AI), and two control trials. In the DI trials, the child was offered options that would either be a fair and equal option for themselves or the other child or they could choose to take a loss of tokes so that the other child would receive more tokens. In the AI trials, the child could again choose to take the equal option, or they could take more tokens, leaving less for the other child. Researchers observed the children’s choices and gathered data from each trial. (Sheskin et al., 2014) 4. Identify strengths and weaknesses of the specific measurement used to operationalize one of the key variables in about 50 to 100 words. I believe a weakness of this study is that it lacks an equal balance of balance and race. The authors do mention that the sample is "majority female (60%) and majority white (80%)." (Sheskin et al., 2014). The strength of this study is that by using counterbalancing, they were able to avoid order effects in these young children that could get easily bored or tired and threaten the internal validity.
