PSY 215 Project One Template Use the following article to support you in writing your blog post: Tips for Writing Popular Blog Posts . Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One Use this Project One Template to complete your blog post. You will first review the various psychological disorders that you’ve learned about in the course and select 3 disorders to focus on for this assignment. Using a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet for each psychological disorder, respond to each of the rubric criteria below to structure your blog post. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Blog post headline: Navigating Abnormal Behavior: What is Different? Three selected disorders: Anxiety Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) Phobia In your own words, identify and describe the main diagnostic features of each of the disorders selected. o Anxiety is how a person responds to stressful situations. It causes the brain to go into overdrive with worry and can cause unreasonable fears. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is when someone has intrusive thoughts that lead to anxiety. Compulsion is acting on these thoughts, like thinking the doors aren’t locked and checking them constantly. A phobia is the fear of specific situations or objects, such as not being able to be around snakes or not being able to touch paper towels. Consider biomedical factors: Describe what it means to characterize the disorders as “diseases of the nervous system and the body.” o Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobia primarily affect the brain because of thoughts that are distressing and irrational to the person. They can become psychologically and physically disabling. One’s daily life is affected by these disorders by avoidance of activity outside of the home, relationships, and employment. Consider clinical factors: Describe the similarities between the disorders selected. In what ways might these similarities impact diagnosis and treatment? o Phobias, Anxiety, and OCD may be hard to diagnose and treat because of the similarities they possess. Phobia and OCD have the characteristics of anxiety, but in DSM-5 have been separated into their own categories. There are times that OCD can turn into 1
phobias or the other way around. these disorders share the same psychological and physical symptoms such as fear, avoidance, and seeking reassurance. Consider historical factors: Describe the ways deinstitutionalization has impacted patient rights, levels of care, and access to treatment of the disorders over time. o Institutionalized patients had been chained up in dungeons and treated like animals or criminals. Reforms were made to give patients better living quarters and a sense of well- being. Public attitudes changed, laws were passed around the world, and there was more humane treatment for those with mental illness. Medications were developed for many disorders, including mood stabilizers and antipsychotics, to treat bipolar disorder and psychosis. After mental hospitals closed, the movement of deinstitutionalization took shape but created problems for mentally ill people and their communities as there are gaps in mental health services, and access to treatment is minimal for most areas of the country. Unfortunately, patients rights to treatment are violated, and the rate of homelessness, incarceration, and suicide. Consider sociocultural factors: Describe the social and cultural changes that have caused shifts in the public’s perception of the disorders over time. o Sociocultural factors influence the beliefs, behavior, and norms of individuals. Social media has become a big influence on the perception of anxiety, OCD, and phobias. It has brought awareness to communities and is helping to break the stigma against mental health disorders. Cultural and social changes have influenced acceptance and understanding through education. Part Two For Part Two, choose 1 disorder from the 3 you discussed in Part One. Respond to each of the three questions in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate and address the rubric criteria. One selected disorder: Anxiety Consider the mind-body connection: Describe whether a discernible bidirectional relationship exists between the disorder and physical illness. If so, explain. o Anxiety does have a bidirectional relationship with physical illness. Stress from anxiety can cause physical illness because the immune system is compromised. “Evidence continues to grow that the brain influences the immune system and that the immune system influences the brain.” (2019) Anxiety can become a chronic condition when a person is always in a state of worry. Anxiety is causes a number of physical illnesses such as IBS, heart disease, chronic pain, and hypertension. 2
