Newborn Videos Response 1. What questions arose as you watched them? A few questions that came up were Does breastfeeding support the health and development of the baby? What are the benefits/risks of co-sleeping? Does skin-to-skin contact benefit the baby or both the mother and her baby? 2. How did they relate to material discussed in the text? We discussed in Chapter 3 how different cultures prepare for the birth of a new child in different ways. This could involve the mother expressing skin-to-skin contact, wanting to breastfeed the child, etc. How a parent prepares for the arrival of a new child may vary depending on a number of circumstances. We talked about how co-sleeping varies in each family and depends largely on cultural ideals/practices. In chapter 4, we learned that infants who are breastfed tend to process and break down milk better compared to formula milk. We also learned that proximal care equals less crying. This means that babies who are being cared for more, whether that be responding quickly to their needs, co-sleeping, or holding them skin-to-skin contact, tend to cry less. 3. In what ways did the material on co-sleeping relate to your own experiences in your culture? How do they differ from the dominate culture? What is the Back to Sleep Program? Why was it started? As an infant, my parents always told me stories about how I needed to be held and rocked in our rocking chair before I would fall asleep. I had my own crib, but my parents wouldn’t always put me in there to sleep. There were times when I’d sleep in their bed with them. In the dominant culture, many people know about sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), so to reduce this risk, many babies are put to sleep on their backs. This relates to the Back to Sleep Program campaign. It was founded to spread the word about how crucial it is to sleep with infants on their backs.
