I am interested in researching religious trauma and how crucial it is for understanding the complex relationship between religious experiences and mental health. Religious trauma includes the psychological harm that individuals may suffer due to oppressive religious practices, doctrinal teachings, or abusive experiences within religious communities. It is essential to recognize the diverse nature of religious beliefs and practices and validate the experiences of those who have undergone religious trauma. I grew up Catholic, but after high school I began attending an Assemblies of God church and later a Pentacostal and church. I've been a member of a Lutheran Church and currently belong to a nondenominational church. I don’t feel as though I ever experienced religious trauma myself, but I have met many others who have shared stories of their early life experiences in church. This research will educate me on the unique challenges faced by individuals with religious trauma and help in developing prevention and intervention strategies. By identifying risk factors and dynamics associated with religious trauma, I’ll be able to work towards creating safer environments within religious communities and promoting more inclusive societies. This will also allow me to understand how to begin breaking down stigmas surrounding discussions of negative religious experiences, fostering open conversations and reducing shame. To research the topic of religious trauma and its psychological effects, I will start by defining the specific aspects I want to explore. I will delve into existing research to understand what will be already known and look into psychological theories to better comprehend religious trauma. I will decide to use surveys as my research method and will make sure to treat participants ethically, respecting their privacy. After collecting and analyzing the data, I will draw conclusions and share my findings through academic channels. I will continue to stay updated on new research in the field and will strive to keep the research process ethical. Seeking guidance from experts in psychology will also be crucial to my research journey. Along with conducting my own form of research methodology, I will seek out other available resources such as psychological journals and association articles.
