Written Reflection #3 For this reflection, please respond to the following questions: What were some of the most interesting discoveries I made while working through this week’s learning materials? About theories? About myself? About others? While working through this week’s learning materials, I made some interesting discoveries and learned some interesting things. One thing that stood out to me this week was Erikson’s psychosocial development theory. In this theory, Erikson assigns a certain age group to a certain learning stage. He pairs all ages from birth to 1 year old with trust vs. mistrust. Just like with the rest of the theory, I agree with this matchup. I believe that since trust is such an important thing to identify in order to survive, it is one of, if not the first thing humans establish with each other. He goes on to pair ages 1-3 with autonomy vs shame and doubt. He poses the question “Can I act on my own?” with this age group. I agree with this matchup as well. I believe that once we get old enough to realize that we are our own person, we obtain a sense of pride and the desire to be our unique selves; However, I believe that as we age, we lose the desire to be unique and become shyer and more worried about how we are seen by others. Interestingly enough, this follows Erikson’s theory precisely. Overall, I have seen this theory become more and more clear as I observe people with this new knowledge. Another this I found interesting in this week’s leaning material was about the self in childhood. In the lecture, it was mentioned that as a young child, humans tend to describe themselves as characteristics such as boy, girl, fast, small, etc. AS we age however, we start using words like kind, loving, smart, shy, etc. This shows how our brains are developing to see ourselves and others as more than just bodies and shapes. I find this interesting as I think about how our perspective of ourselves changes throughout all stages of our lives.
