According to Tim Urban, procrastination is when our irrational drives override our rational drives. We have goals to meet or tasks to delegate; we want to enjoy the now and essentially refuse to put in the effort or focus in achieving these tasks or purposes from the beginning. We put off these tasks until we realize a deadline is quickly approaching or that we did not meet a goal; in this instance, we hurriedly complete our task, often not successfully, to meet our deadline. How does the speaker suggest addressing procrastination? Urban suggests setting goals, then rewarding oneself once we have accomplished them to stay on top of procrastination. Setting reward goals at certain checkpoints can help motivate one to get started and stay on task. Try to find a balance of fun and focus is needed to fight procrastination. Connections In what ways is procrastination a negative form of coping? Procrastination is a coping avoidance skill that causes stressors and harms our health. When someone does not accomplish a goal or task because of procrastination, they can feel depressed and stressed. Once the deadline approaches, extrinsic motivation sets in place and can negatively affect the outcome of the goal or tasks and cause a person to lose a job. In what ways is procrastination a positive form of coping? When someone notices their procrastination by not meeting their goals or deadlines and the risks involved, they make changes to accomplish them. One will learn self-awareness and better
